I'm So Tired

Chapter 1

Synopsis: The apocalypse is over, Dean takes a moment to reflect.

Disclaimer: Supernatural and all of their associated content belong to Eric Kripke and the CW, I own nothing of the sort.

A/N: This story is simply the product of exhaustion over not being able to write any good hurt Dean stories as of late. It's dedicated to Merisha simply because I love her stories. This is clearly AU. And it is NOT slash, it may seem that way if you squint but its basically just emotional.

I'm so tired but I can't sleep

Standin' on the edge of something much too deep

It's funny how I feel so much but I cannot say a word

I'm screaming inside, but I can't be heard ~ Sarah McLachlan

Dean tossed yet another pebble into the water below as he looked at his surroundings.

It's over, I'm here and I should be happy but….It shouldn't have ended this way.

He notices the sunset for the first time in ages as it begins to set in the distance. He hears a flutter from behind, he doesn't need to turn around to know who it is. He feels the hand on his shoulder before he speaks.

"Cas." he whispers, a sob caught in his throat.

"You've done well Dean, we've come to the mutual agreement after all this time that there was nothing else you could've done." Castiel told him.

"Son of a bitch Cas!" Dean yells.

He stands up and turns around angrily to face the angel.

"Who came to this agreement? Because it sure as hell was NOT me!" He was furious, at God, at Lucifer, at Castiel, but mostly at himself.

Without thinking twice, Dean struck out against the angel, catching him off guard with a slap to the face.

The angel looked back at Dean with a look of betrayal on his face.

"Cas…" Dean started.

"Save it." Castiel told him. "I've listened to your bellyaching for the last year! Do you not think this has been hard on me?" Asked Castiel, his voice rising. "I've lost nearly every single one of my brothers! I've betrayed them ALL! And I did it all for YOU. It ended the way it did because it was DESTINED TO. And you of all people should know Dean, destiny cannot be changed."

Castiel walked past Dean, ignoring his half-hearted attempts to apologize. As he reached the waters edge he turned to Dean before vanishing.

"Perhaps you were right Dean, What's dead should stay dead."
