One day Benjamin came home to his shop and found everything in disarray. Lucy was sitting in her spot pale as a ghost. One of his raisers had been melted to quicksilver. Quickly he went over to his wife's side.
"Darling," he asked, "what happened?"
"It was my fault. I was cleaning up and I put the candle to close and the flame started melting it. I grabbed it and tried to save it but it was too close to the melting stove and it fell in," Tears filled her eyes. Benjamin couldn't believe it.
His precious wife was so upset because of an accident. It could have happened to anyone. The important thing was she was okay. She could have been hurt. The unborn baby inside of her could have been hurt but everyone was okay.
"Lucy hush love," he soothed, "it's just a melted raiser"
"But it's the one your dad got you for your 13th birthday when you-"
"I don't care if it was all of them," Benjamin said firmly, "it's just a thing. Things can be replaced. As long as you are okay and the baby is okay that's all that matters."
"So you're not going to get mad," she asked in relief but still with guilt in her voice.
"Get mad? About a thing? Of course I'm not going to get mad. It's just a thing"
They walked outside upon Benjamin's insistence and they came to the pool. Benjamin motioned towards the pool.
"Do you see this Lucy?"
She bit back a sarcastic comment and nodded her affirmation that she saw it.
"It has water in it," he said, "a tipping board and a ladder but do you know what else it has in it"
"Um,"
Lucy was stumped.
"People. People are what matter. You and the baby mean more to me then any thing"
She melted into his embrace and they shared a kiss. Unfortunately they were too close to the water and she accidentally knocked him in. He laughed and dried himself off after stepping out.
"I'm so sorry," she said shakily.
"Hey," he said, "what's important is that you and the baby are okay," and he kissed her again; this time making sure they were far enough away from the water.
