Sophie awoke to the sound of eggs sizzling over the fire and the waves gently breaking against the shore of the island. She stretched and lazily, fumbled out of the tent that she and Robert had spent the night in.
"Morning." He said when he noticed her walking over to the fire. "I hope you don't mind that I started breakfast already, I was getting really hungry."
"Sure, no problem. So, where are we going to search today?"
"I thought we would go upriver and look at the ruins again."
"OK, sounds fine."
After a relaxing breakfast they packed up the equipment they would need for the day of exploration ahead. They clambered into the canoe and shoved off. After about one hour of tedious canoeing up the river they arrived at the Civil War era ruins that they had discovered the day before. It had all started back in Venice back at one of Robert's lectures on symbology. They had been given an old document written by General Lee from the civil war. They had then flown out here, to the plot of land where the battle of Bull Run took place to look for an old temple possibly used by the
Freemasons. They had followed the map and clues left behind to some ancient buildings with early freemason symbols on it.
"Wow, I wish they had built the place a little closer to shore. All this walking is really a pain in the butt."
Right after Sophie said that the ruins came into sight.
"Wow the fine architecture on the side of the wall still blows me away. I mean, just look at it! You can clearly see the compass and scroll today, almost 150 years after the war," said Robert.
"Symbol geek," teased Sophie.
"Fascinating," said Robert ignoring her previous remark, "I didn't notice this yesterday, but look at the compass and square."
"What about it?"
"Come closer; see along the left edge of the compass there is a small L engraved into the side? We must be on the right track; I would bet a pretty penny that it stands for Lee."
"I'll bet your right! And look down below that a little there are some more engravings. I bet it's another clue for us. I'll get some Charcoal and a piece of paper and take a rubbing of them, then we will be able to have a better look at it."
