Something I wrote for a kink meme (or rather a fic meme since it also welcomed gen), and pure speculation on my part.
The day her parents drowned in the shipwreck, her aunt came to pick her up and said they'd be living together from now on. But as soon as they got to her house, Mira dropped her bags and ran into the forest, swearing she'd never go back.
"I don't wanna live with you, auntie," she muttered, "I just want mama and daddy back! It's not fair!" She threw herself onto the forest floor, laid her head on her arms and cried. Why did they have to die? Why did they have to go on that stupid boat trip? It's not fair! her mind screamed over and over again. Not fair!
An hour later, though, she began to regret her decision to run away. Namely because the sun was setting and she'd just realized she didn't know the way back to her aunt's house; being alone in the dark was Mira's biggest fear. Panic seized her and she immediately leapt to her feet, eyes darting around the forest, but all she could see were shadows and tree trunks.
"Okay," she whispered, "maybe Mira will just stay here until Auntie comes looking for her...oh, no, I forgot she hates the dark as much as I do! Hmm, maybe she'll send someone out to look for Mira...but it's so late, I bet everyone's in bed by now anyway!" Mira dropped to her knees, but just as she was about to start crying her vision was filled with a dusky gold. "Huh?" The pokemon materialized before her, and she immediately recognized it from her picture books.
Abra. A psychic type pokemon. She was used to seeing Starlys and Bidoofs running around and they were harmless enough, but psychic pokemon could be dangerous. Mira didn't know whether to run away or to try to talk to it. What if it was evil and tried to steal her mind?
"Um..."
Abra seemed to notice her discontent and moved closer, giving her a soft look as if to reassure her it wasn't out to steal her mind.
"Okay...so you're not dangerous." She sucked in her breath. "H-hi...I'm Mira. I guess you don't have a trainer, or else you wouldn't be out here all alone." She shivered. "Mira needs to get going, though! See, I'm staying with my auntie because my parents..."
The pokemon closed its hand around hers, and Mira suddenly felt uneasy again.
"H-hey, what are you doing?" Maybe it was going to steal her mind after all! She had to get away, but Abra wouldn't let go and its eyes were closed, and suddenly everything went white.
"Mira! Oh, Mira, you're safe!" That sweet, familiar voice awakened her, followed by a near-crushing embrace. "Oh, I was so afraid you were lost forever...I know it's silly, you weren't gone that long, but after your father..."
"Unnh...Auntie? What...how did Mira get back here?" Mira rubbed her eyes. "The last thing I remember was Abra taking my hand, and..." She blinked. "Wait. Auntie, did anyone else come by the house tonight?" she asked.
"No, sweetie," her aunt said. "I found you asleep on the back porch...and there was an Abra sitting by your side! I didn't know you were so eager to start training pokemon!"
Mira gasped.
"Abra?"
"It must have teleported you back to the house. Pokemon can be very friendly to strangers sometimes," her aunt said. "Now you lie back and relax, I'm going to get you some hot milk and bread." Her face became stern. "And don't you ever run away like that again, okay?"
"Mira is very sorry," the girl said, a bit distractedly. Abra saved me! I didn't have anything to fear after all! "Um...did Abra stay? Mira would very much like to keep him!"
"He teleported away as soon as I brought you inside, I'm afraid," her aunt said. "I'm sure you'll see him again someday, though!"
Mira smiled a little. Somehow she had a feeling her aunt was right.
