Prologue
Time, as they say, marches on.
It waits for no man and will halt for no reason. It can heal all wounds but it also makes strangers of us all.
Truly, it is the one thing on this Earth that is undeniably consistent. It is the one thing that will always be, exactly as it always was, for all of the eternity. It was then. It is now.
And it is forever.
August, 2007
Her stomach was alight with countless butterflies as she punched in the number. It surprised even her when she saw her hands shaking, not much, but enough to draw attention to them. She wasn't usually the nervous one; normally she was the one with the cool head and logical sound mind.
But today her sound mind had deserted her and, in its stead, left one that was confused and unfocused. A mind, she knew that she didn't want to enter her fist day of college with.
She looked at the calendar posted on her family's wall. Over the past three months the army of red X's grew larger as they moved closer to August the 17th: Move – In Day. Now, the army had stopped just short of the shining red circle in the center of the calendar. She felt herself growing faint
As of tomorrow everything changes, she thought, everything.
The feeling came back to her again. That feeling of compromise that had haunted her ever since she had made her decision. The feeling that was determined to smite her resolve and ruin everything she had planned for the future. She ignored it, as she always had.
But, she knew, she couldn't ignore it any longer. She no longer had the excuse of packing or getting her affairs in order to pput it off any longer. She knew she had a job to do and this day, August 16th, 2007, was the last day to do it.
She felt her knees go weak, once again she ignored it. She had to be the strong one; that was the role she had been cast in. She was the one with the answers.
Without really feeling it herself she put the receiver to her ear. It rang only three times.
"Aloha!" The voice that answered was spirited, full of life and happiness, it sounded child would sound when his mother makes him believe he was talking to Santa on the phone.
She cringed. This would be the worst part, she knew…who on Earth could possibly stand to hear the hurt in that voice?
At least she didn't have to see it, she told herself, Thank God for that.
"HelooOoo" the voice called over the receiver, "Anyone there?"
She took a deep breath. Now or never, as the saying goes.
"Hey, Ron" she said. Oh God, is that what my voice really sounds like? I sound like an answering machine."
"Kim! I didn't expect to hear from you today, I thought you'd be busy packing."
"No, no, I finished with that, thanks for asking." Domo origato, Mrs. Roboto
A pause. One that was far too long and awkward. Had she always been this bad at talking? And why was she so nervous? Hadn't everyone told her to that this was natural and was expected.
No, not everyone. Just you.
"Uhhh…Kim? is there something you wanted me for?"
Snap back to reality.
"No! I mean, yes, Ron…I…we…we need to talk.
