"I knew I could do it." chuckled Mort Rainey, taking another bite of corn. He had an abundance of it since...well...since Shooter had killed his ex-wife and her lover. Of course it was Shooter's fault. But lately, John Shooter hadn't come around to visit Mort. He didn't mind. Shooter was just an annoying part of himself that would never leave. It was a relief that he wasn't around, complaining about... "My story." came a voice from behind. Mort spun his chair around to face Shooter. "I never did git around to thankin ya'll fer fixin' it. It's mighty fine now that my ending is fixed." he said. Mort nodded. "It was my pleasure, really." he replied, turning back to face his laptop. Shooter smirked. "It took a bit o' strugglin' to make you change it, Mister Rainey." he said. Mort shrugged. He had lost his complete train of thought with this interruption. "That's wonderful, Shooter. Now would you please just leave so I can get back to work?" he asked, annoyance hinting in his voice. Shooter chuckled. "I ain't finished with you, Mr. Rainey." he said, pulling a slender knife from his pocket. "You see, in my REAL ending, the murderer also kills 'imself. Not a right normal thing to do, Mister Rainey. But you see...you never finished fixin' my story. I want it completely fixed. You only did the half of it, Mister Rainey." he explained, a smile creeping across his face.
Mort turned to face Shooter once again, and jumped at the sight of the knife. "What are you talking about, Shooter? You told me your story was fixed..." he said, scrambling to his feet and knocking papers to the floor. Shooter laughed. "Well, Mister Rainey...I lied." he said. Mort panicked, throwing his desk drawer open as Shooter approached him, knife held ready in his fist. Suddenly he felt something cold a metallic in his drawer. Quickly he pulled it out. A switchblade, and it was open. By the time he could react, Shooter was right behind him. "This is the only way, Mister Rainey. The only way that my story can end. It's the perfect ending, don't ya think?" he asked, raising the knife in the air. Mort spun around and thrust the switchblade into Shooter's chest. Shooter gasped and dropped the knife to the floor, clutching his chest. Mort laughed at the sight of him. "I apologize, Mr. Shooter. Like I told you before, it's MY story, and I can end it whichever way I want." he said, as Shooter's dying body disappeared from sight.
