This work is basically based of a small conversation from Scrubs (between Turk and JD, who have one of the biggest and best bromances I KNOW) that I thought could be adapted to KnB. I own nothing, not even the idea…
Kagami doesn't know how it happened. But it had…somehow. He was in Seirin's outdoor basketball half-court, by the side of the school with eight complete strangers, and Kuroko. Kagami assumed Kuroko must have called them here.
"So…who are these guys?" he said to Kuroko who was eyeing them with anticipation.
"These, are the last eight guys in the school who don't realize that I suck at basketball."
"Ah."
"Ok, so here's what's going to happen- I've finally mastered my running hook shot, ok-"Kagami gave a sceptical nod, but continued to listen. "-so when we're going to pick teams, I'm going to hit that shot, then you say 'I'll take that guy! At which point Riko-" Kuroko points to one of the windows on the second floor, where Kagami now sees Riko, smiling and waving to them. "-will call me, and then I say 'I'm sorry, I must go.' Then you say 'Damn, we just lost the best player out here!' Then, there'll be eight guys in the school who think I'm good at sports…and the word will spread." Kuroko finished with a longing expression on his face.
"…when do you find time for real life?"
"Between these thoughts."
Kagami gave him a look "Uh-huh…ok, let's play some ball,"
A few moments later…
The first thing Tetsuya Kuroko felt was the pain at the back of his head. Slowly after this sensation he picked up that he was also lying on something hard, and uncomfortable – the ground. Then he also picked up a dull ache at the side of his temple, which he eventually decided to investigate by moving his hand to his head and opening his eyes. Spots of all different sizes and colours were flying across his vision. As the spots disappeared, he turned to see Kagami lying next to him with his hands behind his back, looking up at the sky.
Slurrily, Kuroko managed to blurt out "Kagami-kun…can I ask you a question?"
"Yeah,"
"Why are we lying in the basketball court?"
The strong player flicked a glance in his direction, but then returned his gaze to the clouds.
"Your hook shot knocked you unconscious, so I laid down next to you so everyone would just think we were chillin'."
"Oh…thank you." was all Kuroko could manage at that moment. Deciding he didn't quite feel like getting up at that moment, he stayed in that position, lying in the middle of the court, so that they were actually 'chilling'.
Friendship really is a wonderful thing. Tetsuya Kuroko had not realized up until that moment how much Kagami's friendship actually meant. These small gestures made all the difference between what he had before, and what he has now. The small boy was very thankful. At least this way, some of his self-respect wasn't a million light years away.
