"Farewell"

~ Author's Notes: this fic is set to the final episode of the Slayers TV series (when Kopii Rezo is being killed off, that whole bit right there). It's been a while since I watched these episodes so please forgive dialogue errors, and considering I'm running on caffeine please send me comments! Please?! ~

Zelgadis watched as Kopii Rezo was dying.

The man looked just like his Grandfather Rezo, bringing a strange déjà vu feeling to his heart. But unlike the real Red Priest, this copy was not blind. He had all the memories, all the quirks of the original, but the fact he had been created in the original's shadow had caused a burning desire to be better. To be stronger than the real Rezo the Red Priest.

And in doing so, had summoned a powerful demon lord to kill Lina Inverse – the one who had killed the original. In killing her, he could find his identity.

The original Rezo had turned Zelgadis into a chimera. The copy had tried to kill them and did not care if he destroyed the world in the process.

Zelgadis had every right to hate them. But he only found pity in his heart.

This copy of Rezo had chosen the fastest way towards his goal in summoning that demon lord.  He wanted to become better. Stronger. More powerful.

He had wanted the same. A youth that tried to get his bluish hair out of his eyes every time he practiced sword skills. The youth who kept getting beaten by the local bullies, who wished to become stronger.

The youth who made the choice to take the fastest path towards his goal. His renowned grandfather made the offer, and he had accepted without a second thought.

Zelgadis sighed. He owed something to Kopii Rezo.

"What name do you want on your gravestone?" He stepped forward.

The copy of the Red Priest smiled weakly. The words took his remaining strength.

"I want… no gravestone. Please… bury me here. This great tree… will be my… monument…"

Both knew the wish would be carried out.

It was time to say farewell.
