A peaceful summer day forest in feudal era Japan. The tall trees were covered in green leaves, flowers were in full bloom. A river flowed along peacefully. There were few clouds in the blue sky above.
On the bank of the river sat a wolf demon. Her long black hair was pulled back into a neat braid, revealing two pointed ears. She wore the usual furs and armor of the wolf tribe. The girl was about 15 in human years. (Demons age slower then humans.) Beside her lay a brown wolf with a black patch over its right eye.
The demon was busy bandaging a bloody wound on the wrist of her right arm. She was muttering to herself
"Way to go Kesa went and got yourself into another fight." The wolf next to her growled. Kesa laughed "Spirited as can be aren't you Kira?" Kesa stood up.
Ever since her back had been killed Kesa and her only companion, Kira, had been traveling alone. Kesa sighed
"Well, if we're going to reach the next village by nightfall we'd better get moving." Kira stood up, stretching herself. Together they walked down an old dirt path into the denser part of the forest.
Kira sniffed the air and growled. Kesa looked up at the sky
"Great," she muttered "Typical summer thunder summer storm, it came from out of nowhere." She began to run, Kira dashing after her. As they ran fat rain drops began to fall. At first it was only a light drizzle but a few minutes later the rain began to fall heavier and heavier until it was a downpour. Lightning flashed above, followed by a roll of thunder, so deep the forest around them seemed to shake.
Kesa splashed through a puddle, searching for a good shelter from the storm. Kira barked excitedly up ahead, she'd found them a cave to wait out the storm in.
"Good job!" Kesa congratulated the wolf as they ran up a hill to the cave. Kesa sighed with relief as they darted inside the cave. Kesa began to shake the water from her pelt.
Kesa sniffed the air and realized that they weren't alone in the cave after all.
