Kate Beckett did not believe in coincidence when it came to her murder cases, and she was not one to believe in magic and the supernatural either. But after this last case she had to admit, since she started to work with Richard Castle she was starting to believe the latter might not be so crazy. Not that she would ever tell Castle that. Besides it's not like she would have to anyway, in her mind psychics might as well be in a similar category as con artists. But as she watched Castle walk away she found her believing that maybe, just maybe, Penny had a much stronger sense of intuition than many other people she had known.
Smile on her face she turned around and headed back to her desk. She wanted to finish off some of the paperwork before heading home. That way when she came in tomorrow there wouldn't be as much to do. She pulled out her chair and sat her desk. She had picked up a pen and was ready to start working when she found herself look at the chair next to her desk. A chair that 4 years ago was just there. Now, now it was his chair. She wasn't sure how long she had been staring but she was interrupted by the ring of her phone. When she looked down at it for a brief second she couldn't help but feel mixed emotions. Had it been anyone else she would have answered sans her current hesitation; it wasn't anyone else though, it was Josh.
He was this doctor that she met in the recent weeks that Castle had been back. She liked him. He was smart, sweet, successful, and pretty hot as a bonus. They had only gone out on a few dates but it was working so far. If she were being completely honest with herself, which she rarely was, he was the guy that you date for his parental appeal.
After a having a quick little mental battle she decided to answer the call. She picked up the phone on the fourth ring. "Hey" she said, with a voice similar to the one use in conversations with your grandparents.
"Hey, hate to do this but I've got to do a double bypass on this patient that just came through the ER. Can we reschedule for Friday when I'm off shift?" His voice sounded kind of husky.
"Yeah, of course!" She shook her head because she was a bit thrown off. She had forgotten that she even had plans tonight. She quickly added, "Same time good?"
"Perfect" there was a pause and lots of sound on his end. In a rushed tone, one where all the words almost blended together he said, "gotta go, they just wheeled the man into surgery."
There was a click before Beckett had the chance to say, "Bye." She hung up and paused for a moment herself. Going back over the events of the last 10 minutes she realized something. That the only place she wanted to be right now, was home. So she got up, and grabbed her jacket off the back of her chair. Then she head for the only place in New York where she could have a few glasses of wine and not worry about driving.
