This is a drabble requested by muffinemporess on LJ. I don't own the characters!
"Hinata-sama?" Neji deactivated his Byakugan, turning to face the girl who stood slightly behind him. He took note of the way she hid herself partially behind a tree, more shy than usual around him.
"Neji-san...I...um...I just..." she stammered, a faint blush spreading across her cheeks as she poked her forefingers together in a way that perfectly displayed her shyness. "Would you...can I...give you something?" she managed to get out, just loud enough that he could hear her. He thought her behavior odd, but finally nodded his assent, stepping toward her.
The closer he got, the more evident Hinata's blush, until she finally turned away just before he reached her, mumbling something along the lines of "just a second". He watched as she fumbled around in her jacket pockets for something and then, seeming to have found it, turned back to face him, avoiding eye contact.
In one quick motion, she held the object up to him, bowing her head in embarrassment. "I..want you to...have this..." she whispered, and all he could do was stare.
"This is..." he shook his head, disbelieving. "I can't possibly accept something like this, Hinata-sama, it's-"
"Please!" she cried softly, lifting her head in a fit of boldness to look into his eyes. "I got it just..for you..." she said, and the emotion he saw in her eyes was something he'd never expected.
Reaching out, he closed his hands around hers and the object inside -- a tiny lovebird cast in silver -- and pulling them close to his chest. He had no words to thank her with, but the message was conveyed nonetheless.
I accept this token of your affections, but for now, this is all I can give you in return...
