She's sad. She wants to cry. Mommy said that she doesn't get to go to school today. She likes school, especially when Marvin is there. She idolizes her older brother so much. But mommy told her they have somewhere really important to go, somewhere that they have to visit and that she needs to be a big girl.
She wants to be a big girl, and she tries her best not to cry.
She doesn't know where they are going. She doesn't recognize anything. All she sees are big, tall buildings.
Soon mommy is getting her out of the car, and picking her up, as some big scary men take their car. Mommy is talking to them, so they mustn't be that bad, but they don't seem like daddy or Uncle Ted or Uncle Barney or Grandpa.
Then they are walking out onto the sidewalk, down the street, and into one of the tall buildings. The tall buildings scare her, so she hides her head in mommy's neck. That's when mommy tells her not to be scared, that Uncle Ted and Aunt Tracy are here, and for a minute, she's excited that Penny's going to be there too. She even asks, but mommy tells her that Penny's not there, but there is someone just as important that she needs to meet.
She's curious. Why would there be someone else with Uncle Ted and Aunt Tracy besides Penny? She likes Penny. She wants Penny. She wants to cry, and she's still trying to be a big girl, but it's hard. She wants to see Penny.
After a long walk down long hallways, Mommy finally opens a door.
"Hi, Daisy," Uncle Ted says to her when he sees her.
She sees Aunt Tracy on a bed holding a blanket, and Uncle Ted standing beside her.
Mommy tells them that she's a bit scared, but that she's ready. She doesn't know what she's ready for, but she guesses that it's why she has to be a big girl.
Before she knows it, Mommy is putting her down on a chair next to the bed, and she sees Uncle Ted picking up the blanket. For the first time, she sees it's not really a blanket after all. She sees a tiny hand, and when Ted gets closer, a tiny face.
"Daisy, this is my son Luke. He's your new cousin."
"Like Penny?"
"Yes, like Penny. Would you like to hold him?"
She nods her head yes, and Mommy moves her hands. They remind her that she needs to sit still, and now she understands why she has to be a big girl. She's going to hold the new baby.
Uncle Ted places him in her arms, and she thinks that he's the cutest thing she's ever seen.
