Hermione one-shot. This takes place in the period after the war. Hermione is looking for a job, and goes to Hogwarts, and returns to the Gryffindor common room. Anything you recognise belongs to JKR.
Hermione paced around the room, letting her fingers drift over the worn rugs draping the sofas. The old table in the centre of the room remained there, and she fondly recalled the days spent with Ron and Harry, searching the table for carved initials of those they might know. Hermione sat down on her favourite seat, and scanned the wood for her initials. Harry and Ron had convinced her into carving her name, and on deciding that her full name would lead to trouble, simply put H.G. Hermione smiled as she found the thin H, and the curled tail on the G that Ron always said was "too much trouble to write."
She noticed another name, written on the table's leg, close to hers. Messily scratched into the wood, were two names that Hermione had never noticed before. Fred and George's names stuck out, and as Hermione looked closer, one of them had drawn a heart from Fred to Hermione's initials. Hermione faintly remembered the twins arguing, something about "What if she sees?" Fred and her had only once had any sort of encounter, a mixed up encounter after they won a Quidditch match. Hermione remembered little, except Fred being very drunk, and herself very giggly. She prayed silently that Ron never found out about that night, and that George kept quiet about Fred's longterm crushes on Hermione. Although, she thought to herself, George rarely said anything now Fred was gone.
The table had names etched in from well before Hermione's time. Ron had found a love poem from his father to his mother, to his extreme embarrassment. She remembered Harry staying up late on nights he couldn't sleep, and would search for hours for his parents names, or Sirius, or Lupin. He did find his mother, but not how he would have liked to see it. Lily Evans had inscribed her name, with a small plus sign, and then S.S. It was only when Harry asked Hermione, that he realised his mother had put in her best friend; Snape.
Hermione thought of Ron, and how he treated her. He never hurt her physically, and he didn't mistreat her. She had a child that was happy, and a husband who loved her. Though Hermione always recalled the times that she sobbed her heart out, and all the times it was for Ron. Hermione often tried to forget for Ron's sake about the time she spent with Harry in the woods, but regularly she was reminded of the night she cried continuously for Ron, till Harry found her. He and Hermione had held each other, finding comfort in a world where both believed nothing could have been right.
Hermione took out a quill, and found a place to write on the table. She scratched two initials as fast as she could, and with one last glance around, she left the common room.
Now she could only hope that her children would never find H.G + H.P.
