The Story of Snape and James

"You know, Padfoot, I think Snape has taken control of my love life."

Sirius stared at James, not believing his ears.

"What!"

"You know, when we hexed him all the time and made fun of his greasy hair, I really hated him. Looking back, I think I kind of blamed him for the fact that I was unhappy; that I wasn't loved back. Silly really, after all, it wasn't his fault. I just was really stupid because by making life hell for him, I made it hell for me as well. I was actually causing my own problems because I was so immature."

"Sorry James, but do you really think you should be telling me this?" Sirius interrupted in a voice that showed the torture he was going through.

"Of course, you are my best friend, I tell you everything. What I was saying is this: once I started being civil to Snape, I noticed that it isn't really that hard not to be arrogant all the time. And actually, that was when I started realising that my love wasn't really that far out of reach as I had thought. I just had to open my eyes and see it and I had to show that I could indeed be thoughtful and a bit more mature."

"And… you are saying that you are happy this way?" Sirius asked carefully, trying not to hurt James' feelings in any way.

"Yes, I definitely am, who isn't when their love is finally returned? I can't believe that I didn't see earlier how easy things can be this way. This is just the way I always wanted my life to be, to be honest, I never even imagined it this great."

Just then, Lily came into the common room where they were talking and walked over to them, giving James a kiss.

"I was just going to the library to see if I could find something for the Charms homework. Are you coming too?"

"I'll be right there, Lils, you go ahead. I just need to get my parchment and ink."

He gave her a long farewell kiss.

Sirius looked after Lily with pity in his eyes and watched her leave the common before rounding on James.

"Don't you feel terrible for doing that to her!"

"Doing what?"

"You have the nerve to ask me that after telling me that you love Snape? Don't you even have a guilty conscience!"

"What! Me- love Snape! I love Lily more than anything else on the world!"

"But… you said…"

"I was talking about the way I had to grow up and learn not to hex everybody I don't like before Lily started liking me. That was it, basically. Honestly, you really thought I loved Snape? Of all people, Snape? I thought you trusted me to have a better taste than that, I don't really like greasy hair all that much and even if I don't tell him that to his face anymore, his hair is a bit disgusting."

James was laughing really hard by now and Sirius quickly joined in.

"I don't know what I was thinking. Sorry for yelling at you but I think you can understand that those weren't pleasant pictures I had in my head when you told me that."

"I shudder to think about it. I think I would prefer almost everybody to Snape."

"You have no idea how glad I am to hear that. I think I just got the shock of my life. But I think you should go down to Lily now, or else you really might have to go out with Snape instead!"

Just a short little one-shot that came to my mind when I was trying to think of some Lily/James and realised that in a twisted way, their relationship is kind of connected to Snape. Hope you enjoyed it!
