Rejection

The door swung open and there she stood in her boot cut jeans and dark blue blouse. It had been so long since Hermione had seen her parents. She thought that went without saying. Hermione's mother had always been opposed to the magical world. Personally, she thought her mother had difficulty enough figuring out how those Vegas magicians did their magic. "Mione, is that you?" asked her mother wearily.

"Hi Mom" she said with a sympathetic grin"

"Ohh my sweet Mimi, look how you've grown!"

"Mom, there's someone I'd like you to meet" said Hermione as she brought Charlie Weasley through the door.

"Hello Mrs. Granger" said Charlie, who held out a friendly hand.

Mrs. Granger shook it and said, "Oh my, it's so nice to see one of my daughter's friends." Hermione and Charlie exchanged a quick smile with each other. "Please come in and I'll make some tea and biscuits.

"Ooh, I'll get them mother" said Hermione, pulling out her wand. She muttered a quick spell and fresh tea and biscuits appeared out of thin air. She held the tray out to her mother whose eyes had narrowed, and Hermione knew why.

There was a moment of awkward silence until Charlie said, "So Mrs. Granger, what kind of work do you do?"

Hermione's mothers narrow eyes grew back to normal and looked at Charlie, smiling she said, "Well, dearie, I'm a dentist, and what kind of work do you do?"

"I uh…" said Charlie, unsure if he should tell her he trained dragons after he saw the way that she glared at Hermione. "I study law" he answered finally.

"Oh, that's lovely!"

After tea and biscuits, they sat and talked about many things. It was increasingly hard on Charlie, who really knew nothing about law.

After awhile, Hermione finally said, "Mom, Charlie and I have something to tell you… We're engaged."

Hermione's mother grabbed her almost instantly and quickly muttered, "Excuse us a minute!" as she pulled Hermione into the kitchen.

"Mom, what was that for?" asked Hermione, quite befuddled.

"YOU KNOW DAMN WELL WHAT THAT WAS FOR!" said her mother, "You think you can just show up, wave your little stick around, and hope that I would except that you're marrying a WIZARD, of all people!" Her mother was practically screaming by now.

"Mom, he's a lawyer, first of all and second-"

"Oh don't give me that lawyer crap!" interrupted her mother.

"Mother, please! Let me explain!"

"Explain, EXPLAIN! You're trying to explain things to me and lord knows I've tried to understand but I don't sweetie, I just don't." Her mother was in tears, "I thought I would get to raise a little girl who went to a normal school and who I could talk to about boys and makeup, not magic and dragons!"

"Mom… I…I'm sorry, I guess…"

"Sorry! You think I will just forgive you after all these years of torment I've had to endure!"

There was an awkward silence.

"Mom, why are you acting this way?" Hermione asked finally.

"Honey, your father is dead." Both had their heads down, tears welling in their eyes. "Please Hermione, just leave" her mother said quietly, "Leave and don't come back."

Hermione left and obeyed her mother, like a good little girl who'd gone to a normal school and talked about boys and makeup.

She never came back.
