Every morning I wake up to darkness. Everything that surrounds me it pitch black. It's depressing to think about, but this isn't a sad story this is the story about how I found my light in nothing but darkness.
My name is Oliver, but my parents call me Ollie. I was born into the world as the cutest baby ever, but in all seriousness I came into this world earlier than expected causing me to have stage 5 retinopathy of prematurity. You could say that I was an "oops" baby but mom hates when I refer to myself like that, so we say I was an unplanned blessing. I was born on Christmas in the middle of a blizzard. Mom had to deliver me at our small home in the country so the doctors weren't able to discover my retinopathy of prematurity causing it to become as severe as it could. The doctors tried all the treatment they could when they discovered it but it was already too late and by the age of one I was completely blind. And so begin the over protective parents.
11 years after I was born came my little brother Henry. If I was an unplanned blessing he was defiantly an unplanned misfortune. But in all reality I grateful for Henry he may only be six but he doesn't see me differently or disabled, he still forces me to play dinosaurs and sometime like to crawl in my bed at night if he's having a bad dream. I'm very thankful for that little brat.
We live in the small town of Storybrooke, Maine. It's a strange little town that has actual fairy-tale characters in it, like get this, my dad is the real Captain Hook, and don't even get me started on my grandma and grandpa. My parents have been through a lot to be together, but that's a whole other story.
Obviously I'm not your average teenage boy, well I mean I could look like an average all American boy but I wouldn't know. My mom's described me as handsome, but I could also have a face only a mother could love. I do know that I gained most of my mother's looks including her blonde hair because I literally hear all the time how I look just like my mom.
I've been home-schooled my entire life because my parents are worried that I'll get hurt, or bullied, it a bit ridiculous how very little faith they have in my abilities. I've grown up blind, it's all I've ever known so I think I should be able to know what I can and can't do. Being home-schooled is the worst, I have very few friends, and I have to spend all day long with my parents, what kind of life is that? But everything is about to change because I Oliver Jones have managed to talk my parents in to letting me finish my senior year in an actual school.
