It was never meant to turn out this way, after all she was the boss. Something about him though stopped her from caring, the sparkle was back in her eye and the spring back in her step because for the first time since Nick's departure, she was happy.

No one had ever done the whole romance thing with her, usually people assumed she was easy and that a couple of drinks would guarantee that she was their's for the night. With Max this wasn't the case. It'd started with flowers but now that he'd been allowed in to Zoe Hanna's world and bed, he made sure he touched her or kissed her whenever he could.

Max was a player, simple as. Picking up girls was what he liked to do, although he wasn't great at it. This was different, this wasn't a one night stand, he wasn't in it just to see how much he could get. He really liked her, dare I say it, loved her.

From the moment the pair had met the attraction was obvious, to Max it was just another woman who was way out of her league, regardless of the new feeling inside of him. To Zoe though it was different, he may have only been a porter but the feeling in her tummy didn't come easily. In fact, it'd had only occurred once before and that was when she'd met Nick Jordan. Attraction and desire built up over the months they worked side by side until the flowers pushed things over the edge. Zoe hadn't planned on anything happening between them but once she'd found the recipt, the voice in her head telling her to forget any possible consequences and go for it, was far too loud. They kissed and all of both of their suspicions were confirmed when there was a flash of an electricity that passed between them. With Zoe and Max flirting was inevitable, however Zoe surprised even herself when she didn't go home with Max that night.

The second time they kissed was after a particularly bad day at work, they were in Zoe's office and not visible when Max kissed her. The words that she knew she should be saying, because they were at work, were on the tip of her tongue. That's where they stayed though because she couldn't bring herself to say them, it wasn't long before Max left with a whispered promise from Zoe that she'd be out soon and that they'd go back to hers.

The first couple of weeks they were almost inseparable, they had an unspoken rule though that when they spent the night together, that they would never stay the whole night.

Neither of them were sticklers for rules and it was Zoe who broke it, more by accident than design. Max had exhausted her and she slept the whole night through in his arms. That morning she was reminded of why it was such a bad idea, Robyn saw her shoes.

After she spent the day in a strop, she went back to Max despite the consequences. He reminded her of who she was before she became clinical lead, before she spent more time doing paperwork than actually saving lives. More importantly he reminded her of what it felt like to care deeply for someone and what it felt like to be loved and that wasn't something she was about to give up.

The probability was that their relationship would crash and burn but most relationships did, that didn't mean she wasn't going to try. The happiness she was feeling now and the possibility of heart break later was a better option than not feeling any happiness at all. Max and her may have been the most unlikely couple but the attraction was there and they cared for each other, something that doesn't happen everyday and that was all there is to it.

A/N This is my first Zax fic and I 100% ship them! They are so cute! This came to me at half two this morning, while I couldn't sleep and the idea wouldn't leave me alone. If it's bad then it's due to it being the middle of the night.
