Wreck Of The Day
I love puzzles. Since I was a kid. My record for the Friday New York Times crosswords is 11 minutes, when I was 13. I'm still trying to beat that. Okay, that sounds braggy. I just mean, once I pick a puzzle up, I can't put it down until it's solved. I think puzzles are why I went into medicine. That's what most of medicine is. Gather all available information, assess the problem, you focus your attention, and you solve the puzzle. People are a harder puzzle. There's never one right answer and you never have all of the information. Most puzzles come down to one last piece of information missing. Whether it's the answer to a medical mystery, it all comes down to that last piece. That's why the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle is so satisfying to place. Unless of course, the piece doesn't quite fit. That can make you wish you never opened the puzzle in the first place. Margaret Pierce, Puzzle With A Piece Missing
Suddenly she stands in front of her. A tall, young black woman in a white coat is standing next to her at the nurses station. Slightly younger than she was is she, estimated Meredith and vaguely remembered her name. Dr. Margaret Pierce. Maggie Pierce she was called by the others. She was the new cardio - thoracic surgeon, Cristina had chosen as her replacement, before she boarded the plane to Zurich, leaving her here and taking over Preston Burke´s Position as head of cardio ...
"You are Dr. Meredith Grey, right?" Dr. Pierce asks curiously as she looked at the doctor. Meredith nodded absently and continued to write about in patient records. She was not in the mood to talk, since Derek never really looked at her, since she had explained to him why she would not move to Washington DC. "You are the daughter of Dr. Ellis Grey, right?" Maggie persists.
Now Meredith wonders what drives this woman to ask all these questions. Maybe she would out yet. Was should these questions about her and her mother? Everyone knew here that she was Ellis Grey's daughter. Why was the cardio attending so determined on finding out all that?
Sighing, Meredith put her pen aside.
"What do you want, Pierce? You know you killed that patient with performing slow CPR?" Meredith responds coldly.
Maggie ignores that comment wisely.
"As for your question, I am. Everybody around here does know that." She scoffs.
"My mother is Ellis Grey."
Silence.
For a Moment she just stared at the new cardio attending. Cristina had hired one of her half-sisters. Another half-sister. Lexie. She loved Lexie after all. She was her sister, the only real sister. And now there is another woman standing in front of her telling her that she is her half-sister. Maggie was too Young to be her sister. Right? This was a mistake, a twist in things, a false document ...
"Mer ... " She immediately corrected herself: "Dr. Grey."
Meredith did not answer. She just took off.
The world was a crappy place. Why did the universe took Lexie away and then sends ... She just did not understand. It was to much. And no one was there to pick up the pieces. With Derek not talking to her and Cristina half the globe away, Alex ... well, Jo did not really like being kicked out of her bed before shift, so one. No one.
She had no one.
She was alone.
Alone.
She finds herself searching for an on-call room. She just wanted to look the doors and disappear. For sure, nobody would miss her. At least, that´s what she thinks. She knows it´s not right but she can´t help the feeling that she is right. Derek´s barely looking at her these days. The next room was empty. But it wasn´t an on-call room, just a supply closet.
She leans against the cold, hard wall and closed her eyes for a moment. It was quiet, nobody was here. No disapproving looks coming from Derek. No half-sisters. Just her and a nice, cold, dreary room. Realizing that she had no one, she broke down. Somehow, she finds herself crying. She suppress the sobs but she couldn´t …
Tears threatened to fall. She was now sobbing uncontrollably and instead of calming down, she only continues. Time passes. She had no idea how much time had passed since she was hiding in this closet. And she didn´t care. Derek is getting the kids from daycare today, there weren´t any more surgeries scheduled for him so he offered to take the kids home. Meredith had taken up on his offer.
Now she was here. Alone.
Like in the beginning.
After a few minutes, she was still crying heavily. Meredith was on the verge of hyperventilating. This time, there was no Derek handing her a paper bag and advising her to take some deep, slow breaths. This time, she was alone. Her breaths came out quicker and quicker. She really needed to calm down …
Suddenly, the door opened, light flashes through the supply closet. A person came nearer, she only hears footsteps, then a voice.
"Meredith."
She couldn´t answer, has enough to do with breathing.
"Mer." Someone exclaimed.
Now she could indentify Amy´s voice, Derek´s younger sister who started working here.
"Here." She rummaged through the supplies to find a paper bag for Meredith as soon as she analyzed the whole Situation. "Meredith." She tried to get her brother´s wife to focus and handed her the paper bag. When Meredith breathed a few times into it, her breathing slowed down and went back to a normal range. Amelia looked at her sister in law, eyeing her with a worried Expression.
Meredith rolled her eyes and said: "I am ..."
"Fine?" Amelia laughed. "You are not. Let me guess: It´s my brother? Is he back to being an ass?" She asked bluntly. Meredith just stared at her. Amelia Shepherd took the non- answer for a yes. "He is back to being an ass, am I right?"
For a few seconds nobody of the two women said something.
When she could breathe again, she waited for a few seconds before saying: "I have another half-sister, my husband isn´t ... we aren´t exactly on speaking Terms. Cristina hired unknowingly my half-sister as the new head of cardio ..."
"The new cardio chick? That´s your ..." Amy asked, not completing the sentence.
Meredith nodded, she buried her head in her Hands. "My life really sucks right now." She mumbles. Amelia didn´t know How to respond. "I thought my dark and twisty days were over, but apparently, they are not. That sucks."
"Dark and Twisty- perfect words to describe me. I am like that too. With the drugs and everything else ..." Amelia looked away, thinking about her dead baby. "I probably should go." Meredith said and was about to leave the supply closet. "Thanks for being there, Amelia." "Technically we´re sisters. Blood related or not, doesn´t matter. Sisters are there for each other and ..." She paused "I know where you come from- with Derek and all. He is the golden child, you know."

Amelia stomped into Derek´s Office. "You need to speak with your wife." She ordered. "What ... Amelia, what are talking about?" "Meredith. You remember, your wife?" She said. "It´s not your place to say something." He started but was cut off by an angry Amelia who said: "I just found her in a supply closet, almost hyperventilating. The reason: You. Brainless brainsurgeon. Go and try and fix this. At least try talking, ever heard of it?"
"Whoa. Stop. Slow down."
"You need to talk to her, Derek. Listen to me, Derek. You two need to talk." With that she left the Office, leaving a stunned Derek in her wake.
Derek looked after his little sister. He could not believe what just happened. But maybe Amy's right and he really should talk to her. He should talk to the love of his life. She deserves to be heard.
A/N: The title 'Wreck Of The Day' is a song from Anna Nalick whose song 'Breathe' was featured on Grey's more than once. Hope you liked it. It's only a oneshot and I won't be continuing it.
