Chapter One

The water was slick with blood. A woman was screaming in the distance, but it seemed unimportant to me at the time. For the first time since I moved to this boring town, something exciting had finally happened: I finally found a boy I liked. When my dad had to move to this island for work and dragged me along I thought it wouldn't be so bad, I mean, the beach during the summer? There's got to be some cute guys there, right? Not so. I could have my pick of rich old white folks slowly walking along the beach, but what I really needed was romance: a guy who'd sweep me off my feet and dazzle me with his smile. A white knight.

This morning I had been abnormally down in the dumps, just lamenting the loss of any form of social life I had and any hope I had of gaining anything similar here when my dad gave me one of those dad pep-talks.

"Bella, how do you expect to make friends if all you ever do is mope around complaining you don't have friends? How about you go down to the beach again today? I've got important work to do and you can work on your tan or something. Maybe something exciting will happen, you never know."

"Gosh, dad. Fiiine."

I packed up my stuff and trudged along to the beach with no real plan for the day other than not getting sunburnt too bad. After tanning for a few hours I decided to cool off with a brief dip. That's when I saw him glistening in the sun. He was swimming in the waves a good distance from shore and I had never seen something so beautiful. His marble skin glittered in the sunlight and I could see the sunlight flash off his teeth when he turned and looked at me. I froze in my tracks, struck by the ease with which he swum among the waves.

I just knew that he and I were meant to be together. I could feel my destiny calling out for me. My heart sunk in my chest when I saw him swimming up to another girl. It figures that all the good guys are taken in this stupid freaking town, I thought. But I was in luck, he made as if to swim past her, bit off her leg and continued on his way.

As people began to scream and panic I swum a little further out to try and see him again. I swam past that stupid screaming lady, and fought off the few people who tried to pull me back. I thought I'd lost him, but I caught a glimpse of him among the waves further off as he turned to look back at me. We locked eyes for a moment before he swam away. It was then that I knew that I had at long last found my white knight. My great white knight.
