"You know, you're my best friend," Katie Bell said, not looking at Fred Weasley.
He snorted. "I had a sneaking suspicion," he replied sarcastically.
She still didn't turn her attention away from the lake. If she had, he would have noticed the odd expression on her face. A strange mixture of shock and thoughtfulness.
"You are," she said. "You're the person I tell everything, and the person I go to when I cry." She laughed suddenly. "And you're the person who hexes my ex-boyfriends."
He grinned. "Anything for you," he said.
"Do you mean that?" she asked, her voice serious.
He was taken aback by the question. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, do you mean it. Would you really do anything for me?"
"Of course," he said firmly. "You have no idea how much I mean it."
"That's good," she said offhandedly. "Because I'd do anything for you too."
He smiled blissfully. "Love you," he said without thinking. Suddenly his eyes widened in shock, not having meant to say it out loud. "I-I mean, uh, I-"
"That's good," she said, in the same offhanded voice. "Because I love you to."
He sat up, staring at her in shock. She still wasn't looking at him. She was looking off at the lake, that same almost unfathomably expression on her face.
"Do you really?" he asked hopefully.
At this she turned and looked him in the eyes. "You idiot!" she said.
"W-what?" he sputtered, confused.
"Of course I do!" she said, jumping to her feet. "I've always loved you! Since the moment I met you on the train, and the first thing you said to me was, 'You know, you're really small!' And I thought I was going to cry, but I saw that you were joking, and I smiled, and you smiled back at me, and that was the moment I knew I loved you!"
"Oh," was all he said as he stood up. Then he grinned. "I beat you," he said.
"Huh?" she asked.
"I loved you the moment you smiled at me, so I loved you first," he said smugly.
"You idiot!" she cried.
His eyes widened in shock. "What now!?"
"You sure took long enough to tell me!"
"Hey, you took just as long!" he said, desperately trying to defend himself.
"Actually," she said. "As you've just pointed out, it took you longer." She grinned smugly and started to walk off.
"Hey!" he called after her. "Wait!"
She stopped and turned around. She was startled for a moment when she realized that his face was now about an inch from hers.
"Why?" she asked, raising her eyebrows.
"I haven't gotten to kiss you yet."
And then he did.
