She slowly opened the door of the locker room, trying not to notice the slight tremor developing in her hands. It wasn't working. Although she would never admit to it, she was nervous. Nervous about the torrent of abuse she would be facing today at the hands of the man she loved. She was sure the words were already forming on his lips, perfectly aimed as to where they would hurt her most. Did he know how much he had hurt her? Of course not. In his eyes she was a cold-hearted cow, unable to feel any sort of emotion.
"Nurse Maconie", she started. "I have a pneumonectomy for a 23 year old girl with carcinoma of the lung at 11:15, should be relatively simple. I was wondering-"
His head whipped around before she could finish speaking, his eyes burning with the fire of anguish and hatred. "Let me take a guess; you were wondering if I wanted to scrub in on your precious patient", he hissed, anger dripping from every word. "Well I think I'll pass on that shining opportunity to be stuck with you for any time extra than I have to. Thanks for asking though."
Mo had seen this whole situation playing out and decided it was time to try and intervene, before Jonny's behavior led to a heated confrontation between the pair. "Jonny that's enough, Jac was just asking about an operation, you need to calm down."
The second those words left her mouth, Mo wished she could take them back. Jonny had always hated being patronised, but this had gotten worse since all the formal acknowledgements of Bonnie's death; all of the people saying 'I am so very sorry' and 'She will be sorely missed' nearly pushed him over the edge as, in his opinion, none of them really meant it. Mo knew not to speak to him the way she just did, but something in her just snapped at the way he was unwilling to give Jac even the slightest bit of a chance to start building bridges.
Jonny was furious at his best friends betrayal; how could she take Jac's side in this? He slowly stood up, his fists clenched, his breathing heavy and his face flushed and stony. "Calm down! Calm down!", He yelled. " I will calm down when my daughter is safe and out of the clutches of the heartless witch that is Jac Naylor!" He turned to look Jac in the eyes and walked over to her, not stopping until they were face to face. "I will calm down once Emma and I are out the reach of your poison, once I know Emma will never have to set eyes on her bitch of a mother!" With that he turned on his heels and walked away.
Jac felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. His words felt like knives in her body, twisting round and round, determined to destroy what was left of her. She couldn't breathe, couldn't move, couldn't talk. All she knew was that she couldn't let the two people she loved the most to leave her. She couldn't let them walk away from her. Not like everyone else had.
Okay so this is my first fanfic and I'm not too sure whether its good or not.
I originally planned it as being longer, but I am wodering if it might be better as a one-shot?
If you like it please review, and also tell me if you think it should be longer or kept short
:)
