Owen couldn't believe how nervous he was. He wanted this date to go well. He had liked Hermione for so long and now that they were both out of Hogwarts, he had worked up the courage to ask the older woman out on a date.
He just hoped she had a good time because if she didn't, he wouldn't have another chance with her.
He counted out the money. The amount was a little much, but he wanted to be prepared for anything, especially since they were going to a Muggle carnival.
Most people wouldn't think this was a good first date choice, especially for a witch of Hermione's caliber, but even though she's a Muggle-born, she missed out on a lot of Muggle activities because of the war. Owen hoped she thought it was thoughtful and not juvenile.
Owen picked her up and fidgeted with nerves as she put on her coat. She placed her hand on his arm. "Just relax. We'll have fun tonight."
Owen did his best to follow her advice, or at least hide how nervous he was. He wasn't sure if he succeeded, but she didn't comment on it.
When they arrived at the carnival, Owen was treated to Hermione's face lighting up. "Owen, I've never been to a carnival before."
"I was hoping you'd like it."
"I love it. Let's go." She grabbed his hand and pulled him towards the games.
He followed. He didn't know how she felt about thrill rides so decided to let her take the lead. If she wanted to go on a ride, she'd tell him.
The spent the next hour playing game after game. He even won her a stuffed animal. He thought she would pick a lion, but she surprised him – and pleased him – when she picked a weasel. Owen wondered if that was about him.
By the end of the night, they had gorged on junk food and even went on a couple of rides, nothing that would cause either of them to get sick, though. He was right by his assumption that she wouldn't choose any of the more intense rides.
When he walked her home, he hoped he would have the courage to ask her for a second date. Thankfully, he didn't have to.
They had just reached her door when she asked, with bright eyes, "So, do you want to go out again next weekend?"
Owen silently nodded, his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth. She was actually asking him out on a date.
"Great," she exclaimed, lightly kissing his cheek before entering her house.
All in all, it was a great first date.
