Of Long Lost Brothers

Part 1: Secrets of the Past

The Scene: Lucious Malfoy's Vault

~~~~~~~
The room was filled with mourning onlookers as Lucious Malfoy was laid to rest. His widow, Narcissa, slumped in her seat with streaking their way down her face. Draco sat by her side, watching with a sort of morbid curiosity, as they lowered his body into the Earth's waiting soil. Dirt. Lucious had gone to become dirt. That hadn't sunk in with Draco yet. The fact that his father's body was right in front of him, and his mother was sobbing uncontrollably beside him, had nothing to do with it. His mind worked like that. If he didn't want to believe something, he wouldn't, at least not for a long while. It was that simple. That's why he got on so well with everything.
Narcissa, to upset to stay the rest of the service, half-dragged Draco to the limousine waiting in the parking lot. They rode the distance to Malfoy Manor in silence. Draco stared out the window while the slightest inklings of truth were threading their way throughout his brain, trying to convince it that Lucious was no longer among the living. It didn't work.
"Mother, why isn't father here with us?" Draco asked as they entered the estate.
Narcissa seemed to cry harder if that were possible.
"Why are you crying, mother? Everything's fine..." Draco trailed off, unsure of what to say.
If anything, this seemed to make Narcissa even more upset.
They lapsed into an uncomfortable silence and Draco went off to his room to sleep.
In the days that followed, Narcissa seemed to gradually recover from her depression. And a week and a half later, she summoned Draco to her chambers.
"Draco, you must help me go through your father's things. It will take less time that way." was all Narcissa said to him, as she swept up the stairs to the attic.
Draco followed her uncertainly. They reached an enchanted doorway, Narcissa muttered, "Alohomora!" And stepped inside the dingy room.
Inside the room, all sorts of things were lying around. Narcissa left curt instructions to Draco, telling him not to follow her, and walked into a particularly gloomy corner and left Draco to his thoughts.
After a few moments, Draco got up and poked at a few random items. He poked a large metal apple-shaped paperweight and heard a small *ping!* He poked the apple again. Another louder *ping!* He poked with his wand this time. Sound ceased, and he felt his arm being pulled toward the paperweight. The metal shimmered as his arm entered it. He panicked for a moment before noticing something poking his hand. He felt around inside the apple for a moment and grabbed the object, pulling it out, along with his arm. The object was a book. He idly picked up the old-looking volume and looked the cover.
