Great Expectations
When Vince starts experimenting with steroids, can the gang help him before his addiction ruins his life?
CHAPTER I: TRY 'EM, YOU'LL LIKE 'EM
The whistle blew and all the football players ran in. Practice was over.
"Great job out there, fellas," the coach bellowed, "'specially you, LaSalle." The tall, slender black boy took off his helmet and grinned.
"Thanks, coach." And, one by one, each of the boys hit the showers. Vince LaSalle was happy with where he was in life; sixteen and a junior in high school, he had a loyal group of pals that he'd known for most of his life, a girlfriend, a supportive family, and, he was sure, a fair shot at a full ride straight to the NFL. He was right in the middle of another Super Bowl fantasy when someone tapped him on the shoulder.
"Hey Vince," Lawson said. "You did pretty good out there today."
"Thanks, you too."
"But---you could do better." Lawson and Vince had been rivals ever since elementary school, but had recently come to terms with each other's skills and had become…almost friends.
"Don't see how I could."
"By taking some of these." Lawson held up a bottle of what looked like vitamins…or pills. "Two before each practice, three before a game---your game will be unstoppable." Vince cocked his head.
"Will they work?"
"'Course they'll work, you dope!" was the answer he received.
"But…doesn't coach say these things are against the rules?"
"Ugh! Look, all I'm sayin' is, if you ever wanna make it to the pros, sometimes you can't afford to play by the rules! Try 'em, you'll like 'em." Lawson tossed Vince the bottle and turned to go.
"I guess you're right," Vince said to no one as he stared down at the bottle in his hands. "I guess you're right." He put the supplement in his pocket and left...
