Disclaimer: I don't own Mutant-X and I'll learn to live with it.
*Goodbye Father*
The wet intrusion of the rain cast a chill far into her bones. A flash of lightening carved harshly through the pitch black sky and lit up the scene before her. A dark, ominous forest, which in daylight would have been beautiful, but right now it was frightening. The scary sight was completed by a single lonely gravestone. It read: Adam Kane, Beloved father, founder of Mutant-X.
She squatted in front of it and ran her fingers over the name. She always considered him as her father. Tears started to mix with the raindrops running down her face. She angrily wiped them away as she felt him walking towards her.
He gently dropped a coat over her shoulders and said: "It's raining Emma, come inside."
She put on the coat but shook her head: "No, You go Jess, I'm staying."
"Well then I'm staying." Jesse said firmly.
She felt the anger rising inside her, the anger she felt ever since Adam died two weeks ago. "Jesse just go, I want to be alone."
"No you don't, you just won't admit it to yourself."
She felt herself get angrier and angrier at Jesse for no reason but the fact he knew exactly how she felt. "Jess, go away!" She snapped.
But he didn't budge: "I'm not leaving until you get it of your chest what it is that is troubling you."
"You want to know what it is?...You! You and Brennan and Shal, everybody and their damn feelings all running through my head leaving no room for my own!" She paused for a second, when Jesse didn't react she raged on: "It's not fair, I still have so many questions and Adam just leaves me with them. Why did he have to die, you weren't supposed to let him die!"
Jesse looked taken aback by this statement but she didn't notice. "You said you'd protect me, why didn't you, why didn't you protect me from this?" She yelled and banged her fists against his chest. He just stood there letting her. "Why? You where suppose to protect me.you.he's dead.he's gone."
She fell to her knees sobbing uncontrollably. He knelt beside her and cradled her in his arms and started to whisper soothingly. "I'm sorry, I'm really sorry, but there was nothing I could do, it was his time. He was old, sick and tired, he just went to sleep."
"He should have woken up." She sobbed into his arm.
"I know baby, but it's for the best, he had a long and happy life, he just couldn't go on."
She slowly started to calm down and said:" He was our father."
"Yes he was, the best we could wish for, but even fathers die."
"It's still not fair." She stated wiping the tears of her face.
"I know, I know." Jesse said as he stood up and hoisted her onto her feet. He laid a comforting arm around her shoulder and started to steer her back to the sanctuary.
She let him, but turned around one more time to say: "Goodbye father."
Jesse hugged her and asked: "Feel better?"
"Yes, thank you Jess."
"I love you baby." He answered. She smiled and kissed him.
"Now we'd better get back because our daughter and her cousin are making us hot chocolate." He smiled.
"You let our daughter team up with Shal and Bren's daughter to cook? You're insane!" then an evil smile appeared on her face and she started to run. "Last one there has to clean up the mess!" She shouted over her shoulder, and Jesse started to run as if his life depended on it.
