I. Gathering courage.
When Neville asked her to the Yule Ball, he didn't expect that she would agree, because you know he was him, and Ginny Weasley was herself and she was amazing.
He did not ask Hermione even though he met her since his first year, but he guessed that Harry or Ron would invite her, so it was pointless since the beginning (Hermione would choose her friends, of course), yet it was not the only reason why he asked Ginny.
Neville have been watching her since the accident in the Chamber of Secrets, he saw how she struggled those first months after the encounter with he-who-must-not-be-named (you heard a lot about these kind of incidents in the common room, the trio weren't really discreet when they discussed their latest adventure), though he also saw how she begun to reconstruct her life, she spoke more to her classmates and Hermione befriend her at the end of the year. She was more brave than she gave herself credit. Neville respected that and was just a little jealous, he was too a Gryffindor it must be in himself to be brave, but until now that courage had not manifested yet.
So he thought that maybe if he knew more about Weasley he could learn how to be brave, Neville had to reunite all his guts to ask her (his inexistent courage some might say).
"Do you want to go to the Yule Ball with me?" The boy asked quickly and almost intelligible, but in the quiet atmosphere of the library at the lunch's period even his rambling could be understanding.
Ginny just open a little more her eyes and closed the book that she was reading before his sudden question, he felt a little guilty, she was studying potions and he knew firsthand how scary could be Snape.
"Okay" She answered.
And that's it, they didn't talk about it anymore and after some minutes of awkward silence he just left with a promise to wait for her an hour before the ball in the common room.
It was easier than he thought, now he only needed to learn how to dance.
