Thought I'd try Fara/Mabian/Who-cares-what-it's-called!
Mara stood in a doorway. Right in the middle, one step forward to the unknown, one step back to the familiar. With her bag clutched in hand, she was having trouble garnering the courage to take that leap. Her parents had called, told her something she would have been thrilled to hear just a little while ago. Mara had applied to a rigorous pre-university school, right when she had been upset, angry at the whole world. At that point in time, she'd wanted nothing more than to escape this school, that had then only contained the hurt of the betrayal of ex-boyfriend and best friend. The unthinkable had happened, she had been accepted.
Just as she was building back her relationships with her friends, Mara was granted this opportunity that she just couldn't pass up. And not just building back relationships, but maybe, just maybe, starting a new one. Mara blushed as she recalled giddily Fabian's lopsided grin. But could she really let go of an opportunity to get her into her medical school, the medical school? Of course not.
So here Mara stood, willing herself to step forward, but all she could think about was the sweet way his eyes lit up when discussing the mechanics of ancient Roman trebuchets. As if on cue, Fabian walked into the front hall, shutting the door slowly on the common room that contained the soft mumble of voices that assumed she'd already left.
"Hey." He murmured.
"Hey." She replied.
"We didn't really get a proper goodbye, and I thought you might still be here. I mean, that's what I would do, so hard to say farewell to this old place, well, uh, that's what I thought, I mean, you could have just forgot something, or, um..." He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "I'm not really good at this."
Mara laughed softly. "Good at what?"
"You know. Good byes." Fabian said, eyes focused firmly on his shoes. "But... I guess I just wanted to say..." There was a long pause. Fabian took a step forward and quickly, as if he didn't want to stop and think otherwise he might not go through with it, he kissed her.
Still in a rather close proximity, he looked her straight in the eye. "You are amazing, Mara Jaffray and I want you to do this. Take this once in a life time chance. I'm not asking for committment, but please don't forget me."
Mara nodded mutely, unexpected tears welling in her eyes. "Promise." She whispered as she grabbed her trunk from the floor and ran out the steps to the bus stop. Mara glanced breathlessly back at the old house as she managed to board the bus she almost missed. She couldn't help but feel this was the perfect farewell to start of her new journey.
