"Pineapple!" shouted James. Sirius fell over the bed. Remus raised an eyebrow and Peter looked confused.
"What?" asked Remus. James kept looking at Sirius, who nodded in response. They both ran away and Remus and Peter looked at each other. Peter asked "What did just happen?"
Next day found third years James Potter and Sirius Black looking glum. They were playing with their food. Remus looked at them and asked "What happened?"
"It isn't the pineapple." Answered James.
Remus gulped the food and said, "Maybe it would be better if you could explain in a more detailed way."
Sirius took a deep breath and started, " We found that the kitchens are behind one of the portraits. We are sure it is behind the portrait of the fruit bowl. We asked around a few Hufflepuffs, but they are not telling us anything! Finally, one of the first year said, 'it's related to one of the fruits. Now, have you seen the amount of fruits there?"
"We've been trying to get there for weeks now, but no avail at all!" James slammed his fist down on the Gryffindor table and everybody looked at him. Lily Evans made a face and went back to her food.
Peter squeaked. "Maybe it's one of the smaller fruits?"
Sirius and James looked at each other, and suddenly they had lifted Peter on their shoulders. The hall looked at them in amusement. McGonagall was about to take away points for their misbehaviors when Dumbledore said, "Let them be Minerva. They are just celebrating."
It was late night, and all the four boys were huddled under James' invisibility cloak. They finally reached the portrait and took off the cloak.
"God Sirius!" Remus scrunched up his nose, "You smell like a sweating dog!"
"Well," Sirius said, "I've been working out a lot. Of course it would sweat. It's not my fault that you have heighted smell."
Remus rolled his eyes and eyed the portrait in front of him. It was that of a large fruit bowl. All kinds of fruit that Remus had ever heard about was there. He scratched his head and said, "Cherry is missing."
"What?" asked James.
"Cherry. This bowl has all the fruits I have ever known-heard about or eaten. But a cherry is missing. Maybe it is somewhere I can't see and that is the entrance to the kitchens."
The boys nodded and Sirius said, "Wow! You're good Moony!"
"Moony?" asked Remus, as Sirius felt the glares of Peter and James on him. "Yeah, a new nickname. So, cherry huh?" he turned his attention back to the portrait. Remus shook his head and looked at the portrait. That was one thing that bothered him.
The other was abundance of pears. He knew Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw had set up the door. Did they love pears that much?
"There's a cherry!" Peter squeaked and three pairs of eyes moved where Peter was pointing. Indeed, there was a cherry, but it wasn't green or red, but a very funny shade of somewhere between.
"Maybe the painter was high when he made it." Said Sirius, tilting his head.
"Or maybe…" Remus moved towards the painting and saw that the only cherry was on a pear. He touched the pear, and it giggled. Suddenly, a doorknob appeared.
All of them were silent. Finally Sirius broke the silence, "You had to tickle a bloody pear? How high were the Founders when they made this door?"
"Only Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw. They made the kitchens." Answered Remus. He turned the doorknob and entered the kitchen.
And that's how the Marauders found the kitchen.
