Fic dedicated to Nina Kerndall for her christmas present~
"You want..world peace?" Finland stuttered.
"Yes," Estonia replied, habitually pushing his glasses upward.
Finland felt a sense of dread envelope him. "I-I'll see what I can do." Finland left Estonia's house and crossed back to his own. Every year during Christmas some too-hopeful idiot will ask him for world peace. It's impossible.
Finland had tried to achieve world peace, but the differences between countries are too great and some charismatic leader ("such as Hitler," Finland shuddered at the thought) will ruin all the peace-loving countries' work. Yet every year people still ask for it, and this year it's Estonia. Finland really didn't want to disappoint his best friend, but world peace was too much to ask for.
He could always resort to giving him a new thumbdrive, though.
He sighed and patted his trusty reindeer on its red nose, thinking. Maybe he'll give Estonia the second best thing to world peace.
On Christmas day, Estonia woke groggily. Feeling for his glasses on the bedside table, he heard someone knocking and went to open the door. Finland was standing outside, dragging his sled behind him, harnessed with reindeer. He gestured toward the sled. "Hop on." Estonia was curious. Was this his Christmas present? He clambered in and they set off.
On the journey, he saw many things. People starving, their skins wrapped around their skeletons. A man dying on the battlefield while his friends tried fruitlessly to save him. The various governments trying to cover up their mistakes, to cover up their debts. Dirt strewn alleys, with puddles of muddy stagnant water a child was still drinking. Fish and turtles choking on plastic, birds freezing in oil. Mangled bodies of animals unlucky enough to get captured by poachers... Estonia couldnt look anymore and turned to Finland, whose face reflected his pain.
And then Finland went on his route, delivering presents. Estonia saw the happiness, the ignorant bliss on the faces of the children upon receiving the gifts and felt a slight despair. The children didnt know anything. While they were enjoying themselves, other people were dying.
Arriving back at Finland's place, he smiled apologetically. "Merry Christmas. I wanted you to see why world peace is impossible. Too many problems. People who live in comfort and far away adopt a it-won't-happen-to-me attitude, too."
Estonia nodded wearily. So Finland wanted to give him awareness of his foolish hope. He was about to turn away when Finland spoke again. "But we can help," Finland offered. "I give away gifts...to maybe lessen the pain. It doesn't work for long, but it's better than nothing. I can't do much, but I still try."
"We could get donations for the needy." Estonia suggested, not really believing in the cause. Finland nodded eagerly. "We could enlist other countries' help too. We could start with Sweden, maybe even tomorrow. I'm sure he'll listen to me." Estonia agreed, feeling somewhat better. "Merry Christmas to you too," Estonia smiled weakly, and went back to his house.
Nobody noticed that Sealand had dipped Estonia's scarf in sugar and a reindeer was happily licking at it.
Ahaha! I just had to dump Sealand in! The ending bit of donations is lame and I dont really like it. Any suggestions to improve? Please point out my grammar mistakes! Thank you! ^^
I did not elaborate much because this is a oneshot. I may develop this into something more. ^^
