Bad Blood

Chapter One
This is it. It's the last time that I will travel to Hogwarts for the start of a new year. Most Hogwarts students would be excited to be starting their seventh year, however these are dark times.
It's been plastered all over the front of the daily prophet for weeks; disappearances, strange marks appearing in the sky, deaths... it's bad. Mum and dad are worried about Caspar and I going back to Hogwarts this year, in case the school is targeted. I managed to convince them that it will be the safest place for us.
"Marlene!" My mother shouts from downstairs. "Get a move on or else we'll be late!"
I levitate my trunk downstairs and into the back of the muggle car we've hired to take us to Kings Cross Station; the journey isn't too long, only about an hour.
"Have you got everything?" Mum asks as we clamber into the muggle car. Her blonde - almost white - hair is pinned into a neat bun and there are dark circles underneath her eyes; she's worried because the dark lord has been targeting pure blood families to get them to join or support his cause.
My mother was a Malfoy before she married my father and she received news from her father about supporting the dark lord. I heard her telling my father about it when they thought I was asleep.
"Yes mum." I reply, forcing a smile and tucking a strand of my white-blonde hair behind my ear.
"Right kids," My father begins, climbing into the driver's seat of the car. "I'm not going to lie to you, some horrible things have been happening over the last few weeks and I want you two to keep safe, you hear me?"
I glance over at my little brother, well, I say little but he's actually a few inches taller than I am. Caspar looks worried though, and he begins running his hands through his golden hair.
"Us McKinnon's don't back down easily and I'll be damned if we join that evil-" My father continues.
"Benjamin, that's enough!" My mother shouts. "We don't need to worry the children with that."
"Marlene isn't a child anymore Janet, she's 17 years old for Merlin's sake!" My father replies angrily; his grip on the steering wheel tightens.
"We don't need to talk about that on their first day back to Hogwarts, do we?" My mother replies angrily.
"Mum, it's ok." I speak up.
"No, Marlene, it's not ok!" My mother shouts, turning in her seat to look at me. Her bright blue eyes are wide and boiling with anger. "We are a pure blood family so the dark lord and his followers will come after us, Marlene! They'll want us to join them and there's only so many times you can say no to a death eater."
"A what?" Caspar speaks up, flicking his golden hair out of his piercing blue eyes.
"A death eater." I reply. "They're followers of the dark lord-"
"Marlene!" My mother shouts.
"Janet will you stop shouting!" My father bellows, "I'm trying to drive this bloody death trap machine but you lot will not quieten down!"
The only time anyone talks for the rest of the journey is my mother, to point out an empty parking space at the station.
I carefully place the owl cage containing Pepper on top of my trunk on the trolley and push it through the barrier between platforms 9 and 10. It really astonishes me how oblivious muggles are, I mean who wouldn't notice hundreds of students disappearing through a seemingly solid wall!
The platform is crowded with students pushing trolleys and parents bustling about to bid farewell to their children. I glance around to see if I can see any of my friends but suddenly my vision is obscured by a flash of red hair and then someone jumps on me.
"Marlene!" Lily squeals, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me slightly. "Why didn't you come and visit? I told you my parents were ok with it!"
I hug the tall, red haired girl back before replying.
"Your parents might've been alright with it but mine aren't, especially my mother." I grumble angrily.
"What do you mean?" Lily asks. "Is it to do with..." She lowers her voice to a whisper "The dark lord?"
I glance around us before nodding my head slightly "I'll explain when we're on the train." I reply.
"Have you seen Mary, Alice or Emmeline yet?" Lily asks me, glancing round at the rest of the students on the platform.
"No, you're the first person I've seen so far." I reply, look round for the unmistakable figure of the one and only Sirius Black.
"Are you looking for Black?" Lily smirks, nudging me in the ribs with her elbow as we push our trolleys towards the loading area.
"No." I lie quickly, however I feel my cheeks burn and Lily's grin widens. "You and James are very much the same you know." I scowl.
"I- uh- no we aren't!" Lily says exasperatedly, her cheeks turning the same colour as her hair. I just smirk at her and climb aboard the red train.
"Should we grab an empty compartment or-" I walk straight into something hard and end up on my arse.
"Watch it McKinnon." Sirius laughs, shaking his unruly, black hair out of his eyes. He offers me a hand up however I ignore it and clamber to my feet myself.
"Have you seen any of the others?" I ask the tall boy, dusting off my backside.
"Need a little help?" Sirius smirks cheekily. I bat his hands away and raise an eyebrow at the scruffy but very attractive boy.
"Alright McKinnon, keep your knickers on." Sirius laughs, still looking at me with his beautiful, grey-
"McKinnon?" Sirius says in an amused voice, tilting head to the side. "Where you listening to anything I just said or were you just checking me out?" Sirius smirks.
"You wish." I reply sassily, flipping my hair as I slide past him and continue searching for the others.
"Oi, McKinnon!" Sirius shouts after me. I ignore him but he follows me down the train. "I do wish, actually."
I turn around to tell him to bugger off but he's already retreated off to find the rest of the marauders.
