Sauron seethed with anger when he discovered that his Wraiths had
failed to kill that miserable hobbit. Not only that, but Saruman had
captured it!
"How dare he!" He thought, "Saruman shall pay for his treachery this day!" The Nazgûl returned, and reported that Fangorn was moving and the Ring for which he so desperately needed was going to go to Minas Tirith. Sauron's mood was not improving. He grabbed a hold of an unfortunate snaga near by and killed it by merely touching it.
Later that day when he was in a better temperament, he turned his Eye to the north - for he had felt a Power there, a Power akin to his beloved Ring. It faced him for a moment and then was gone, but at least he could send out his Nazgûl to investigate. As he waited for them to return, Sauron thought about his Precious and the inscription upon that had soon become a promise to his master.
"Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, ash burzum-ishi krimpatul." He, Sauron, would rule over all of East Middle- Earth, and once he had that, he could continue and conquer West Middle- Earth. Then and only then would it be safe to go about freeing his master - the greatest of all the evil beings upon the planet and most feared by all. He alone of his master's followers would gain his respect and be rewarded for freeing him. Maybe, just maybe, he would be allowed to preside over East Middle-Earth.
