Spoiler Alert: Season Four compatible ________________________________________________________________________

Sam watches numb with horror as his brother soars through the air, tossed like a leaf by the spirit they've been battling all night. Dean hits the wall with an almighty thud, slides to the floor in an unconscious heap.

The ghost can wait. Sam runs over to help when suddenly Dean is bathed in a blinding white light. Then it's gone and a man is kneeling down at his brother's side, pulling his hand away from his head.

"Castiel?" Sam whispers.

"You need to watch him more closely" the angel's voice is so soft, so very sad. "Dean is…

"Taking too many chances. I know. I-I'm trying." Sam has knelt down on Dean's left side, Castiel on his right. Sam reaches out, takes his brother's hand. "Is he okay?"

"I have healed the damage to his body. The marring of his soul, that I cannot repair." Castiel looks down at the man on the ground, even as Sam repositions himself to hold his brother closer. Dean's head is now on his lap, Sam gently stroking his brother's hair.

His tears fall on Dean's face like rain. Green eyes open slowly.

"Quit talkin' about me like I'm not right here." In spite of himself, Sam chuckles.

"You okay, Dean? C'mon, let's get you back to the hotel."

"No way." Dean struggles to sit up, shoving away Sam's hands. "That ghost –"

"Has gone" Casitel remarks. "The spirit abandoned this vicinity when I arrived. I doubt it will return." The angel stands, helping Dean to his feet. "You should do what your brother says, Dean. He has your welfare at heart, even when you do not."

Dean's about to retort, when he sees the pleading in Sam's eyes. He wants to help his big brother so badly, even when Dean feels he can never be healed. Doesn't DESERVE to be healed. This time, though, the feelings are just too much. He aches all over, and most of the hurt is from his soul. He turns to Castiel. "Thanks."

Blue eyes that at first had seemed so cold, like twin chips of ice, soften faintly. "Just following"

"Orders." Dean smirks. He allows Sam to supports him back to the car with no complaints, the angel trailing silently behind. Sam helps his brother into the back seat. Castiel watches them drive off.

To start the dance over again tomorrow.

Them against the world.

A/N: Happy Birthday, Supernoodle!
