Aaaaand, here's my fic for Light's deathday. Because Death Note still holds a very special place in my heart. ;D

I don't own these guys, either.

Final

He stumbled and fell, his chest hitting the sharp edge of the stair. Unable to go any further, he managed to struggle onto his back and lay on the metal staircase, wheezing, his limbs going numb as his heart beat weakly.

Here was the great Kira, crashing down as he was so close to reaching his goal. So close to becoming a god.

Light managed to open his eyes, but the lids were so heavy and it took such an effort. It was already evening; he could tell from the golden light streaming onto his face from the high window. His eyes drifted over to the rafters across from him, mostly hidden in darkness, and his mind was growing too dull for him to take much surprise when he noticed a figure standing in midair. The face was blocked by one of the iron beams, but Light would've recognized that posture anywhere.

The mighty Kira has fallen, said L, and although the faint sounds around the fallen man were becoming distorted, the voice came through quite clear.

Yes, and aren't you pleased? Light wanted to reply sarcastically. Your little heirs cheated me into a corner. He wanted to say it, but his mouth didn't seem to be connected to his brain anymore. Nevertheless, the dead detective managed to hear him anyway.

I would've been considerably more gratified if I had been the one to bring you to justice, he said, a hint of remorse in his tone. I do hope, by the way, that you realize you're hallucinating.

Of course Light realized. Even if he was dying, it hadn't made him stupid. Besides, he highly doubted that people in Mu would have the ability to just… go back and visit the living. People would be seeing spirits all over the place if that were the case.

L crouched down in his habitual position, and now Light could see his wide eyes, staring with those panda-like circles and his nail between his teeth, just as he had been right up to his death.

You're almost my age, now, he remarked in a thoughtful tone, tilting his head, and Light thought how irrelevant that was even as his heart twisted. Out of all the people he had killed… L's was the only one he regretted. Oh, it had been necessary, of course- with the detective constantly at odds with him, it was the only way for him to progress. A perfect world took precedence, and as the creator of that world, he had to make sacrifices.

You went against human nature, you know, L interrupted. When a person is going to lose someone they love, they try their hardest to hold on, will do whatever it takes in hopes that things will stay the same. But you… you set yourself up to throw everything away. Your family, your chances… me. I know you loved me, in that warped way of yours.

Light's mouth twisted upwards into a grin. I did, he agreed. The way I never would've been able to love Misa or Takada or any of them. They let me use them. It was easy and predictable. But L… L I had to work against, fight against… we had our battle of wits… it was fun.

He felt his consciousness begin to fade and his eyes begin to slip shut. The projection of his conscience moved closer, crouching next to his body and staring down at him in that owlish way. He wondered if he would still have a consciousness when he slipped into Mu… into Nothingness.

If you do, said "L," I'll greet you there. You were the only case I never officially solved, after all.

Light felt a choked noise, which might have been a laugh, gurgle up from his throat. Please. You loved me, too.

With that, his eyes finally fell shut, and the illusion spoke no more.
