Robert looked up and caught sight of the fire escape anchored loosely to the side of the crumbling building. Knowing their kidnappers were closing in on either side, he made a lightning fast decision and hoisted his brother up to the ladder dangling crookedly from the first landing.

"Hurry up Little J." At his brother's worried look, Robert added, "don't worry. I'll be right behind you."

Bravely, the four year-old continued to climb until he was standing on the rickety platform. It lurched abruptly and he almost fell before grabbing hold of the rusting guardrail. Robert cursed silently, not realizing his initial jump to catch the ladder would have caused the shoddy fire escape to jerk like that. He should have, but things were a little chaotic at the moment.

He reached the landing and grabbed his brother, absently feeling the little boy tightly hug his neck. Robert ran up the five levels to the top of the building, trying hard to ignore the creaks and sways of the of the stairs as they made their way up. It was a miracle -- to him -- that the whole damn thing didn't disintegrate underneath them.

Yells sounded from below them and they heard the sounds of footsteps pounding up behind them. The brothers backed away, holding tightly to each other. Robert looked wildly around, searching for _any_ avenue of escape while Lucas stared, transfixed, at the jerking of the ladder as their captors closed in on them.

They weren't going to escape....
