"I don't wanna!!" Three-year-old Lucas Bridger screamed, his small face red from exertion. He stood in the hallway between his bedroom and the bathroom, only the bottom half of his pajamas on -- the top half clenched tightly in his fist.

"Lucas-" a fortyish woman with straight blond hair started.

"No! I don't wanna and I don't hafta!!" Lucas screamed again. He ran into his room and slammed the door in his baby-sitter's face.

She sighed. All she wanted to do was get the child into a bath and then to bed. She didn't know what was wrong with him. He was usually such a sweet tempered boy, but tonight he had just been a demon. Saying "no" every chance he could and screaming. He wouldn't even eat his dinner. All he wanted to do was lay on the couch and watch TV.

She'd tried to get him to get up and play with her, or at least color, but he'd just shook his head and gone back to his video. Now this happened. She hadn't wanted to, but it was time to call his parents.

Forty minutes later found the baby-sitter gone and Nathan and Carol sitting worriedly beside their youngest's bed, watching him anxiously. The little boy sighed in his sleep and turned over onto his side, blanket clutched firmly in his hand.

"I think we'd better call Dr. Walters and make an appointment for Lucas tomorrow," Carol said. They'd already deduced that Lucas was showing all the signs of an ear infection, something they'd had to deal with many times before with Robert. The sooner they got Lucas looked at, the better.

"She's on vacation, remember?" Nathan said. "I'll call the base and get Lucas in their as early as I can tomorrow. They'll squeeze him in."

Carol nodded and stroked Lucas' sweaty hair from his forehead. It was no fun being sick, and ear infections were worse then your run of the mill cold. Nathan would get Lucas to the doctor tomorrow, and everything would be fine.
