The night was quiet and all encompassing; darkness swallowing up the sky. Few stars glittered against ever present lights of the busy city skyline. Ginij watched them, quietly, thrumming with the electricity of a thousand thoughts he didn't quite understand. His tired eyes groped the sky and its beautiful stars for answers.
But the answers he wanted lay right next to him. Glasses perched carefully on the bridge of his nose, eyes (the ones that made Ginji choke on his food sometimes) shut to the world. And for a moment, Ginji envied him. The eel's eyes were kept open by invisible crowbars.
"Ban-chan," Ginji nudged.
Ban's peaceful form scowled. Without opening his eyes, he muttered, "What."
"I was thinking." Ginji pressed his fingers together and looked to the sky, away from Ban's face.
"That's a miracle." Ban sighed. "About?"
"Us."
"It's nice to know you think about me. Good night."
"That's not what I mean," Ginji replies quickly.
"Okay." Ban opens his eyes and takes on a look that might be described as annoyed to anyone who didn't know the retriever so well. But Ginji knew in his heart he was listening.
"What about us?"
"I was thinking. What happens if I'm no use to you? I mean, I'm not really smart like you, and—"
"Idiot."
Ginji blinks and his eyes finally return to ban's face.
"What?"
"You having thoughts like this is even more useless than you apparently think you are, you big dumb eel. Even if you were a big puddle of goo, we're still partners."
"Or did you forget about the S?" Ban gives a hint of a grin, but it's quickly wipes off his face and replaced with a more subdued smile.
"The S means I'm never alone."
"Right!" Ban delivers a whack to Ginji's head.
"Ow, what was that for—"
"Now go to sleep; because if you keep me awake, you'll find out how it feels to be useless."
