Your Bones: Prelude

In the spring we made a boat
Out of feathers, out of bones.
We set fire to our homes,
Walking barefoot in the snow.
Distant rhythm of the drum
As we drifted towards the storm.

The sparrows fled as the man walked past their homes.
He had been a fawn, a denizen of the forest, once. How quickly the other beasts had forgotten him once the Witch had placed him that vulgar lord, the Hunter's body. And how they had all turned on him when the Witch died. Had Cassian not chosen his current quest, the beasts of the wild would have forced it upon him. He heard the disappointed and resentful sounds of the Witches' forest as he left it for the last time.

The owls, the doves and the hawks had all come to a temporary peace so that they could gossip above him. He heard it all. Of all the beasts in the wild, he had been the Witch's favorite. And Witch had braved such dangers to aid him, when the fawn should have faded away from the Hunter's bullet. Cassian realized that, in a sense, he had died and then awoken in a body not his own: a human.
But still, he lived and thus was thankful to the Witch. At that moment the trees and birds had whispered to him that it was not so bad, after all his new body would now allow him to protect the Witch. Cassian could be the forest's champion and protect the Witch, the wilds had sang that day.

Cassian still could neither know, nor accept what had killed Jezabel: the ignorant and wanting villagers who had feared him, the Lord Gladstone's men seeking revenge, or that Devil Jezabel was controlled by- that gave nothing but power and madness?
The moon was a cold and unforgiving stone held aloft in the night, and Cassian did not know what lied ahead as he went in the Hunter's body, with the box of the Witch's bones, into the human's world.

Chasing leafs in the wind,
Going where we've never been.
Said goodbye to you my friend,
As the fire spread.
All that's left are your bones
That will soon sink like stones.

Fucking Christ, I need to study for finals Monday, not write.

I blame this oddity on reading old, old fairy tales, looking at CassJez, listening to "Dirty Paws" by Of Monsters and Men on repeat and having watched the Fountain and played Dishonored.
That combination, along with the fact that my response to finals stress is writing, lead to this.

It is something of a whim, but I'm excited by it and hope I can come up with more.

I'm tempted to start introducing more of the characters, but this is such a new idea that I'm not sure who and how. Probably Justice, for one.

So, comments and suggestions if you may?
