The Card

A Father's Day Story

Dobey walked into his office with a small smile on his face. He had just had a most relaxing Father's Day Sunday with his family. They had attended church and enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Edith. A handmade card from Rosie, a more grown up card from Cal were given to their dad. And, before the day was over, the whole family was on the floor laughing and giggling over a game of Twister.

Pulling the chair out from his desk, Dobey found a small box with an envelope on it. Looking quickly around, he wondered what kind of prank was being pulled this time. Just this past week, he had managed to get the phone calls stopped about plumbing jobs. Dobey did not know for sure who was behind that, but he had a pretty good idea.

Carefully, he opened the box, and laughed out loud. It was a picture of his two hooligans, both with big smiles standing in front of a plumbing and hardware store. Yep, suspicions confirmed. Then, Dobey opened the envelope and read the card inside:

Not All Dads are Real Dads

But They are Just as Important and Just as Loved

Then a handwritten note:

Thanks Cap for all you do for us. Thanks for picking us up when we fall, letting us learn from our mistakes, and having faith in us and what we do. We love you Captain – just as sure as if you were our real dads. Thanks for everything!

Starsky & Hutch

And, at the bottom of the card, a roughly drawn red and tan car, with a brown and blond stick figures drawn in front of them.

Dobey smiled, scrubbing his face to catch the tears spilling from his eyes. If only those two knew how much they meant to him.

Later that evening, on the mantelpiece that held the homemade card from Rosie and the grown up card from Cal, Dobey lovingly placed the special card and picture from his boys. Yes indeed, it had been a wonderful Father's Day.
