Flower

Scorched by the heat of the midnight sun,

the flower burns on the battlefield.

Ice in her veins, frozen words on his tongue.

She was the weapon he refused to wield.

The iron tang of blood like a sickly perfume

drowns out the violet's soft, comforting scent.

The bullets and bodies are solemnly strewn

like wildflowers wondering where the morning light went.

She wasn't a tool, the trowel in his shed,

nor the spade worth no more than the foul dirt and mud.

She was more than the soldier he pompously lead-

gentle, earnest, adored as his own flesh and blood.

Blank as a slate, but not hollow inside.

No names for the feelings that swelled in her heart.

She wilted and withered the day the man died.

Stems severed, she suffered from being apart.

Were the words all he had, all the major could give?

The breath from his lungs whispering over her face

ordered the flower to fly free and live;

an echoed "I love you" his last gift of grace.

Love? Did she know it? Such an elusive thought.

Was there place in this garden of war and disdain

for a seedling of such timid beauty to sprout

from a man to a girl with no family nor name?

From the rubble she rose, with no hands to feel,

cold metal limbs hanging heavily down,

scripting smiles and tears to discover what's real

til the words to her own heartfelt letter were found.

The typewriter clacking, her soul understanding;

the flower preserved in the pages at last

though plucked up and dried heard her major commanding

and made a new life from the ash of the past.

The flower of the battlefield, ice cold but burning,

was never a weapon, but a violet he grew

from a sapling who knew not of love's gentle yearning

to a woman whose eyes reigned the infinite blue.

I love you. The whisper fell softly as summer

as the sunlight bled down, seeping into the earth.

A smile graced her lips as the flower remembered

the soldier who taught her what pure love was worth.
