Edward sighed; he knew what he had to do. He whistled and Den's head perked up from the death like sleep he had fallen into,

"C'mon boy." Edward said gruffly. Not wanting to let on that he needed Den to be there, to help him not to cry.

He flung his blonde head back and marched out the screen door. The dirt path was as always; brown and long, it seemed to stretch out forever on the grassy knoll's Edward had grown to love. The cemetery was lined with more stones and place-marks than Ed could count, they somberly dotted the warm, green hillside with patches of dark, serious gray.

"I'll go in alone." Ed whispered to Den, hoping, almost believing he would understand.

Den stared up at Edward with brown, doleful, puppy dog eyes. Edward walked through the black gazebo and walked to the large cross under the willow. He gently put down the aster's he had been carrying and stared at the cross, biting his lip to keep from bursting into childish tears. He stood as still and long as he could before crumpling to the ground. Back slumped, his face was stone and hid any possible traces of emotion.

"I love you mom." He spoke to the stone and with a shriek the wind screamed across the dry, green grass, allowing it to play gleefully with his gold braid.

He lifted his face to the angry breeze, it slapped and smacked his fair cheeks and he let it. A few hours went by before he got up shakily and whispered a goodbye to the sleeping rock.

Den wagged wildly and licked Edward's hand, casually as they walked toward the same place they had visited so many times before.

The burnt remains, like a skeleton standing straight in the otherwise wilted surroundings. Edward sat down on a block of rubble hugging his knees to him; he rested his hand on Dens warm head.

The wind started again and blew the ashes that stuck to the wind like the sticky, tacky glue Edward remembered throwing and hurling at random classmates so well, when he was eight and in a small, kindergarten classroom.

He reached out and taking a handful of ashes, he ground his fingers against the cold, chalky grayness before letting them go to blow in the angry wind that blew them to another person. Edward sighed and hugged Den before walking back down the road paved by his tears.
