"Sometimes I trip on my shoelaces-"
"Sometimes."
"-because they always seem to be untied for some reason-"
"Always."
"-but when I trip, I never fall. Just stumble a bit."
"That's good. That you never fall, I mean."
"Do you ever trip on your shoelaces?"
"No."
This is how conversations with Butters usually go. He talks and I listen and interject when I can. Sometimes he'll force himself quiet to get me to talk, but he always ends up taking over the conversation, and I never stop him from talking.
"Do you like shoelaces?"
"I guess. I like lace."
"What kind of a lace, if not a shoelace? I don't get it."
When I do talk, I usually say something not-so-appropriate, in which he questions my words and we go through this, this awkward exchange of slow corruption.
"Like lace on costume."
"Oh! Like on dresses and aprons."
"Yes.. do you have any costumes with lace?"
"Well there's some on the bottom of my apron. I don't know if you ever noticed it. I can show you this weekend, if you want."
"Okay."
"Also, would you mind staying over? My parents are going to a convention outside of South Park and they'll be gone the weekend."
"Okay."
"Oh boy! You don't have to ask your folks?"
"Nope."
"That's cool. You're a cool guy, Ken."
He often invites me over whenever his parents go out of town. Every time his parents go out of town, so far. He often bakes, we often watch movies, and he often falls asleep in my arms. So far that happens every time too, but I don't want to state it as fact. I don't want to jinx it.
"Not really. You're the cool one, Butters."
"Awh, no way. You know so much more than I do!"
"On one subject only. Probably."
"Can't you tell me stuff on that subject?"
"Not yet. One day."
"Okay.. well, can you share something with me this weekend?"
"...Sure. It'll involve your apron."
"Okay!"
It's hard to try to take it slow, but I'm sure things'll be better the slower we take it. It'll mean more. To the both of us. He's already shown an interest on the subject.
"Ken, lunch is almost over."
"Oh. Right."

...
"I was starting to wonder if you would kiss me at all!"
