It was his fault, he knew that the second he heard that Lily died. He studied the stone, and felt tears in his eyes. No, he would not cry. He did not cry when he first heard about her death nor would he cry standing at her grave.
Thoughts of her swirled around his mind, as his soul wanted to die. It bloody hurt so much that he wanted to commit suicide right there. How could he live if she was dead? If she was rotting because he told the Dark Lord about something he overheard by chance?
A teardrop slipped down his face as he stood there just a few days after that stone was put up. Why must he? He slipped his knife out, and started to cut down his arm, when a hand stopped him. He turned his head to Dumbledore.
"Severus, he is still not gone."
He looked away from the older wizard, back toward Lily's grave. Even now, he could not be with her. He quietly promised her that one day, he would be dead with her.
It took years for it to happen, but in the end his throat was ripped out. As he died, he stared up to the eyes of Lily's son. The green eyes staring down with slight pity. He gave her child the last gift he would ever give. His memories of her and the memories that Lily's son had to see.
When his eyes reopen, there she was. She looked like she always did, with that dark red hair and those green eyes. She smiled sadly at him and whispered,
"Thank you, Severus."
