"Wow… look at that…"
On the way home, the Kenshin group had stopped over a bridge and was looking at the sunset. Yahiko was playing with Ayame and Suzume. Megumi and Sano were sitting on the grassy bank under the bridge. Kaoru and Kenshin were still on the bridge, gazing at the orange and pink scene being painted in front of their eyes.
"It's…it's so pretty, Kenshin."
"Yes it is indeed Miss Kaoru. I think every sunset is a present, that I do." Kenshin's voice was happy as usual, but had a note of sentimentality.
"I think that one of the things people should always do is take the time to enjoy the pretty little things in life. It's hard enough for us, imagine if we never had these pretty sights."
'She's thinking of Jin-e and Kanryuu, Aoshi, every one. None of them would have happened upon Miss Kaoru if this one had not been there.' Kenshin cleared his throat.
"I would like to apologize, that I would."
"For what?"
"If this one had never come to the dojo, then you would not have had at least half the trouble you have needed to face, no you would not. It probably would not have been this way if I did not ever come. I have been thinking about leaving and-"
"SHUT UP!" Kaoru was mad, but it was different. She wasn't red, and she had tears in her eyes, and was almost sobbing. "HOW DARE YOU! If you left, then what? Who would have saved me? If you had not been here then….I…I…" she slowly took his hand.
"If you were not here Kenshin, I probably would not be alive. I could not survive if you left me all alone-"
"I would never leave you in danger, Miss Kaoru." He smiled at her, and she blushed.
"Kenshin?"
"Yes Miss Kaoru?"
"Thank you…" And leaning up, she kissed his cheek. They both blushed and still holding hands, gazed once more at the sunset.
Peering over the edge of the bridge, Sano whispered to Megumi.
"I win! Pay up."
There was a jingle of change, and then both heads slipped back under, giggling.
