Betrayal

Shouts rang out and arrows flew, as the little bugs on the ground scrambled madly in an attempt to catch him.

The hanyou leapt from rooftop to rooftop, laughing mockingly at their pitiful efforts. They couldn't reach him. Even in this disgusting form, he was more than a match for them.

His hand tightened around the jewel in his palm, golden eyes darkening. Bitterness flooded through him at the memory of Kikyou's betrayal.

Why? When he'd finally allowed himself to trust, why now?

The Shikon no Tama tingled enticingly in his hand, and a feral smile slipped across his face. He would show them. With this, he would gain mastery over his pathetic human half and prove to the world that he had need of no one.

He was alone; had been for more years than he could count, and he would finally embrace it.

Kikyou's clear voice sounded in the night. "Inuyasha!" He froze, a stubborn flicker of hope igniting in his soul. Her arrow struck him with a resounding thud, crushing his last hope as surely as it pierced his heart.

A/N: This was originally written for a LJ contest. I would say "enjoy" but it doesn't seem quite appropriate.
