Dave sat in his chair that he had spun to look out the window. He could not look out into the bullpen, not while she was down there. He could not do that to himself. He was already hurting over what he could not have. He was in love with JJ, but he could not bring himself to tell her that. He did not want to hurt her. He was known around the office as being a player and he did not want to bring her into the world that was known as the gossip mill. He could not do that to her. He sighed as he heard her high heeled boots on the cold, concrete floor.
"Here comes temptation" Dave muttered as he heard her stop in front of his door. She twisted the door knob and entered. Dave slowly spun his chair to face her. She was beautiful. No, she was more than beautiful with her pregnant belly protruding. Will had left shortly after JJ had told him about the second baby. According to him, it was too hard taking care of Henry that he could not take care of a second child. Dave had given him a nice shiner for that comment. Dave loved those kids like they were his own.
"Dave, conference room" JJ said. Dave smiled at her and nodded. He wanted nothing more than to tell her, but he worried that idea would not go over well. It was too soon for JJ to start a new relationship.
"I will be right there" he said. JJ smiled at him gently and stood rooted to the spot, almost as if she had something else to say, but could not bring herself to say it. He looked at her in anticipation. "Is there something else JJ?" he asked. JJ looked him in the eye, but instead of saying anything she shook her head.
"No Dave, sorry, I guess I just got distracted" she replied. Dave nodded in understanding. He was having the same problem and always did when JJ was near him. She smiled at him once more before turning and heading to the conference room. Dave watched her leave.
"I love you JJ" Dave whispered. He might someday tell her that to her face, but for now he was going to have to deal with not having her as his. She would be someday, but not today. Little did Dave know that JJ was thinking the same thing.
"I love you Dave" she said setting out the file folders. The tears welled in her eyes. She wondered if she was destined to live her life alone or if she would ever get up the courage to say to his face how she felt. It was going to be a long time coming for them.
