Saying Goodbye Is Hard To Do

He held her close, pulling her into a tight embrace. He could smell the fragrance of her hair, over the dirt and grime of their prison cage. He whispered into it and she gave a small chuckle.
He pulled her tighter and she gave him a tight squeeze.

But, just a suddenly as the guards brought her in they took her away again. He struggled against the guards, crying out threats and pleas. But, they wouldn't listen. They never listened. And, as they pulled her away and out the door. He felt himself die a little bit more. The emptiness in his soul, his heart. Every part of him tearing apart.

He would pound against the door until his knuckles bled, one last piece of resistance against total despair.

Her body was old and decrepit now when moments before it was so full of life.

An escape from such an untimely end.

Her last shuddering breathe.

He tried not to cry when her voice cracked and she tried to speak.

He whispered, " Elizabeth, just go to sleep."
