Chapter 1 ~ Snape
Harry couldn't stop fidgeting. It had been constant from the moment he had woke as it was finally the day he would be collected for Hogwarts and could once again be free from sharing the same space as his wretched relatives. He'd received scarcely a letter over the summer and was both anxious and annoyed at the reasoning behind this
"My boy, it simply isn't safe", Dumbledore had said, "owls are being intercepted by Voldemort's followers, I cannot allow your location to be compromised, I'm sure you understand."
Like hell he did! After midnight he would turn seventeen and become of age thus ending the blood wards the Dursley's home provided and he would be at risk of Voldemort and the Death Eaters once again. A few poxy letters over the summer to help keep him sane wouldn't have made the slightest difference in Harry's opinion.
Harry glanced at the cartoon-cat clock that had once belonged to Dudley. Two o'clock. Just another thirty minutes and he would be out of this dump! He began scouring the room, checking for books or anything he may have forgot to pack in his trunk.
But hours passed and there was still no sign of anyone coming for him. The letter he had received from Dumbledore before leaving Hogwarts had stated that he would send members from the Order to take him to the Burrow on the 31st July, his birthday. So why had no one came?
He wondered whether there had been a Death Eater attack and perhaps no one from the Order was able to come get him. He was so deep in thought formulating hundreds of scenarios and predicaments they could be in, that he fell off the bed abruptly, when the plump figure of Dudley barged into his bedroom.
"Haven't you ever heard of knocking?" Harry spat icily.
"Um, there's a guy downstairs for you. Says he's with some Order, Dad told me to tell you."
"Oh ok. Is there something else?" Harry asked when the blond made no move to leave.
"I dunno, I know your lot are all mental but this one is real creepy, Mum thought it was a vampire!" Dudley said, paling visibly.
Harry groaned. There could only be one Order member that fitted that description. Sure enough when he'd made his way downstairs he was greeted by none other than the greasy git Snape. He was staring at the house with great disdain and adopted a cold sneer as he caught sight of Harry.
"Well Potter, finally decided to pry yourself from your room I see. I hope you've already packed. I do not wish for this to be any more of an inconvenience than it already is."
"I am. But why did they send you? Anyone would be better and why are you late?" Harry asked.
"Believe it or not Potter, not everything revolves around you and your merry band of Gryffindors. I was sent to collect you as the rest of the Order is shall we say, currently indisposed. This is not my idea of a fun excursion either so I suggest getting your trunk and possessions and not prolonging this any longer than we have to."
A cold look once again took form on Snape's face as Harry made for the stairs. Vernon, who'd been eavesdropping from the kitchen, decided this was the perfect opportunity to gloat over the fact he'd no longer be burdened with his freak of a nephew's presence.
"You hear that boy?" he growled. "Make sure you've got everything as you won't be back here! Including that ruddy owl! Makes you think, when even one of your lot isn't happy to see you!"
He was pointing a pudgy finger in Snape's direction, earning him an icy glare filled with disgust.
"Be that as it may, he is still a wizard albeit an incompetent one. But you Dursley are nothing but an obnoxious, obese, filthy muggle that does not deserve the presence of a wizard, even if it is an imbecile such as Potter. A whale for a son, haggard gossip for a wife all living in suburban bliss. How tawdry."
Harry could have sworn he saw steam coming off his uncle as his face glowed dangerously red. He began spluttering and shrieking various profanities while Petunia tried to calm him down. Harry bit back a laugh and once retrieving his trunk, headed downstairs to see an unamused Snape waiting impatiently.
"Come on! We've wasted enough time with idiotic muggles for one night and I'd rather get this unpleasantness over with Potter!" he yelled at Harry.
With a flick of his wand, Snape cast a shrinking charm on the trunk and told Harry to put his invisibility cloak on.
"We'll have to side-along apparate since you've yet to take the test and portkeys are too risky with the Dark Lord's followers roaming the wilds. So hold on tight Potter, I don't need you being splinched all over London." Snape snapped, grabbing Harry's wrist.
Before Harry could protest, he was ushered out the house and they disappeared with a booming crack.
