Alone

Eponine glanced across to the sleeping mound next to her and sighed. That was it done. Montparnasse had been forever hounding her, forever pressing her to become his lover. Now she had. Never in her life had she felt so repulsed with herself.

She surveyed the room, which from today would be her home. It was nothing fancy, considering it was Parnasse's it seemed very dull to her indeed.

They were in the attic of a town house as the further up you went in a house the cheaper the rooms became.

All that was in the room was the bed she was now occupying,, a small wooden chest of drawers upon which a dusty and chipped jug and washbowl sat and two wooden chairs. That was it. Her home

The form beside her stirred, awoke and reached for her. She didn't go to him, yet she didn't push him away. It was nice, she reflected, nice to know that you were actually wanted for a change but it didn't make her happy. Nothing did.

She was cold inside, dead and even though Parnasse wanted her, he didn't love her. She felt so lonely.

"Come here you daft cow" he pulled her into his arms after having to sit up to reach her as she didn't move towards him.

Daft cow he had called her. He'd said it in a soft voice, as all lovers talk to each other in the early hours of the morning she supposed, but he had meant it. Just like every other time when he had called her stupid, slow, awkward and ugly. Ugly. That one hurt the most because she knew she was. She could change everything else if she had wanted to, if she had cared or thought it would have made a difference. She could read books then she wouldn't be stupid. She could become experienced therefore not being awkward or slow. But she would always be ugly.

"Tell me I'm beautiful" she whispered. She wasn't usually vain, she didn't usually care but things had changed and she needed to be reassured, surely everyone needed, and had the right to have their confidence boosted once in a while.

"Idiot" he said "I can't. Ain't no one ever told you it's wrong to lie?!" He laughed at his own cruel joke, pulled away from her and went to collect his clothes. Leaving her in the cold bed

Alone.
