Disclaimer: Dark Angel belongs to Titanic Guy & Co. The song "Superman" belongs to Five for Fighting. These aren't mine, I have no money, blah blah, woof woof.
Dedication: To Abi
Notes: This is a songfic/filk so if you don't like that kind of thing, don't read it. This just came to me while I was listening to this song and I had to write it (Yay, 1 New Year's Resolution down, 12 to go). This is my first DA fic, so please be nice, and know that most of what I have planned to do will be radically different from this, so don't discount everything if you don't like this.

Max watched the pouring rain through her window. It was a fitting end to a horrible day. Earlier that night, she had gone on an Eyes Only mission to shut down a kidnapping operation. She stopped the criminals, but not before they killed their latest victim.
How could someone do that to a child? Why wasn't I in time to stop them? What good is it being genetically enhanced if I can't even pull off a simple mission like this? What's the point of even trying? The questions chased themselves in circles inside her head. Original Cindy was out partying, Logan was asleep, and Max was alone. Whe walked over to the radio and turned on the Oldies station, hoping that maybe some music would help to despell the gloom. The lyrics seemed to float into the dark room.
I can't stand to fly"I can't stand to fight," thought Max. She was designed to fight - to kill - and she could do it when she had to defend herself or those who needed her help, but she wished it wasn't necessary.
I'm not that naïve
I'm just out to find.
The better part of me.
"You're not the only one." Max had heard this song before, but she never really paid that much attention to the meaning of the words. Now she started to listen closely. It reminded her of why she tried to help people through Eyes Only. She started to sing along softly, adding her own words as the song played.
I'm more than a bird I'm more than a soldier
I'm more than a plane I'm more than a freak
I'm more than some I'm more than some
pretty face beside a train wacked-out transgen of the week
And it's not easy to be meI wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie Find a way to hide
'bout a home I'll never see From the past that's chasing me
It may sound absurd
But don't be naïve
Even heros have the right to bleed.
I may be disturbed
But won't you concede
Even heros have the right to dream.
And it's not easy to be me
Up, up and away, away from me
Well it's alright
You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy or anything.
I can't stand to fly I can't stand to fight
I'm not that naïveMen weren't meant to ride Girls weren't meant to deal
With clouds between their knees With messed-up feline genes
I'm only a man I'm only a girl
In a silly red sheet Through Seattle I roam
Diggin' for kryptonite Looking for family, friends
On this one-way street And a happy home
Only a man Only a girl
In a funny red sheet I just want to be free
Lookin' for special things inside of me, inside of me, inside of me, inside of me, inside of me
I'm only a man I'm only a girl
In a funny red sheet Through Seattle I roam
I'm only a man I'm only a girl
Looking for a dream Looking for a home
I'm only a man I'm only a girl
In a funny red sheet I just want to be free
And it's not easy. . . It's not easy to be me
As the song ended, Max continued to stare at the rain, feeling a strange kinship with a 20th century superhero.
