Nora Walker watched as her grand daughter Olivia sat beside her father Scotty Wendel. The two were looking over a receipe for a chocolate cake. They were baking a Birthday cake for Scotty's husband and Nora's son Kevin Walker.

The two men had adopted Olivia 6 months ago and had discovered that the young girl was unable to read. But they had caught it early and the youngster had made great strides in a very short time. Nora smiled as she noticed Scotty beaming with pride as his daughter read aloud from the sheet of paper.

Once the child was done. Nora spoke to her " Olivia why don't you go to the pantry and get the things we need." Olivia rolled her eyes "This isn't that lame shopping game is it? She asked Nora. Nora looked at Scotty in surprise "Lame shopping game?"

Scotty shook his head as he looked at the young girl " Oh HA,HA! Very funny. No, its not that lame shopping game." He looked at Nora as he put his hands up in the air " What is it about that game that no one wants to play it." Nora laughed " Welcome to parenthood Scotty. That's rule number one. Every child thinks one or two of their parent's ideas are lame. I speak from experience. "

She turned to Olivia "Tell you what, go and get the things you need out of the pantry and then you can lick the icing bowl when we make it. Now scoot." Smiling broadly after glancing over at her father Olivia grabbed up the paper and headed to the pantry. Nora called after her " There is a stepladder in there if you need it." "Ok ," came the response. Nora looked at Scotty "That worked on Kevin till he was 15." Scotty giggled as he winked "Still does."

Laughing ,Nora turned to face her son in Law "Olivia is doing so well . She read that list like it was nothing. And don't think Scotty Wendel that I didn't see you beaming while she was reading it. I can spot a proud father from fifty feet." Scotty beamed "Yeah, we are so proud of her. Her teacher says she is actually taking part in class now. We read with her every night before bed and of course in the beginning, Kevin insisted he help her with homework,"

Nora groaned "Oh no. How does she feel about that ." Scotty laughed " she actually told him to get out of her room, or she would make him feed Mister Z live crickets." "Mister Z? " Scotty laughed " Thats what Kevin and I call her geko, Zemulan." Nora was about to speak when the young girl came back with a armful of ingredients. She put them on the counter. Nora looked at the receipe then back at the ingredients.

She then turned to Olivia and smiled warmly " Let's see ,you seem to have gotten every thing on the done Honey." Olivia smiled shyly "I couldn't find the macadamia nuts ." Nora looked at Scotty"I forgot the macadamia nuts" Scotty laughed as he got up from his stool."I'll go and pick some up." He picked up his coat and kissed the top of Olivia's head "Be right back." Scotty headed out the door. Nora turned to look at her grand daughter." So Olivia , how do you feel about carrots?"
